Im a newb at this electric stuff so please be kind...

Im looking to get into an electric heli (have flown 50-90 nitros for years) and I am looking at either the ballistic or the E7, but I had a question on motor selection.

It seems like in the Rave forum the motor choice is the Scorpion HK-4525-520KV. In this forum it appears to be the Hacker A50-12L. I understand there are gearing differences, but if the helis are similar size/weight, the Scorpion motor is about 150 more than the Hacker. I know Hacker is a good brand but why would I pick one motor over the other when I can just gear the heli to the motor? What am I missing here?

Any and all input is appreciated.

Thanks,
Angelo

Both will work great with the appropriate gearing.

We're finding the Hacker Turnado to be a highly underestimated motor and one of those rare cases where less expensive is better.

It's under $200 and has the benefit of being perfectly balanced at the factory and includes high quality bearings.

The motor is *very* quiet and produces gobs of power, and stays relatively cool.

For some reason, the CC 80/120/160HV's really gets along with the Hacker, I don't know the technical reasons, but the governor and this motor really work great together. It's a set and forget marriage.

So really, an outstanding motor and an exceptional price, highly recommended.

The main reason you see Hacker recommended for Synergy is because Matt Botos ran them almost exclusively in his prototype machines. Also, the 470/580kv Turnado motors are perfect for 12S/10S setups respectively using the included pinions.

As a bonus, Hacker motors don't require oiling every few flights!

Sounds good - thanks for the quick replies. How are you determining headspeed, consumption, etc. Is there sofware out there that gets you in the ballpark?

Since it looks like I have the motor/esc choice sorted out, if you dont mind me asking, what charger setup are you using for charging 6s batteries?

I use MrMel's headspeed calculator:

http://www.readyheli.com/headspeed-calculator.html

Seems to be pretty accurate.

As far as *actual* consumption, that's going to depend on how you fly. I fly a mix of smack and big sky:

E6 12S TP 3850's, Hacker A50-12L, CC120HV ICE2 v4 = 6 minutes, 2800-3100
E7 12S TP 4400's, Hacker A50-12L, CC120HV ICE2 v4 = 6 minutes, 3400-3600

If I fly like 10 or 15 times and really start beating on it I usually shave 30 seconds off that.

For charging, I used the Hyperion 720 Duo and dual MeanWell RSP100024's, gives me a solid 1800 watts and 40 amps, I can charge to 95% from my last flight in 6-8 minutes, from store in 4 minutes.

+1 on MrMel's headspeed calc. And yes, consumption can and will vary depending on components used and how you fly. I have a 12S E6 setup similar to above and use 3300mAh packs, only getting 4 minute flights.

I use an iCharger 306B with dual HP ESP135 power supplies and do my charging in parallel. Takes 20-25 minutes to charge 2 12S 3300mAh flight packs.

Crank up the amps on that 306 beeflyer. I charge 2 x 3300's in under 15 minutes.

Amps are cranked, that's 4 x 3300 in 20-25 minutes.

Where are you guys finding the A50/12L/470 motors? They seem to be hard to find right now. Also, is the stock shaft long enough for the E7 third bearing block?
