Woodcrafter,

I am a new flyer currently learning on Phoenix and out in my driveway. I am flying the Trex 500 model on the sim and a Hausler 450 and and EXI 500 in the driveway. My driveway flying is basically hovering and slow forward fight. My forward flight is out and back, left and right. I also do a rectangle around my self, stopping at the corners with a 90 piro for the next leg. All of this flying is done in HH mode on the gyro. My hovering is tail in, right side in, left side in. Very limited nose in so far. Both helis get away from me quickly in nose in.

When I am flying on the sim I am flying circuits with lots of confidence. I find flying in rate mode on the sim helped me get to the level I am currently at. When in rate mode the Heli flys a nice co-ordinated turn. I roll into the turn with cyclic, add a little back pressure with cyclic, and a little collective and I get a nice smooth turn. In HH mode my turns are a completely different animal because I need to be adjusting for all aspects of the turn all the way around the turn. To much rudder for the speed and bank and I get a nice skid. To little rudder for the speed and bank and I get a huge slip. Sometimes I will get the speed, bank and rudder right only to have the back pressure stop the Heli in the sky. I know it is all about practice and that is what I am doing. I want to be able to do a co-ordinated turn in HH mode. If a turn does get away from me flipping into rate mode certainly helps fix the turn. I would not want a gyro that did not have rate mode available to me.

I am almost ready to take the real machines to a larger space so I can experience the thrill of FF with the real machine that I experience when on the sim. Both of my machines are setup so I can use rate mode if I want to.

I do agree that rate mode is not useful for 3D flying, but I do feel that rate mode is VERY useful to a sport flyer.

RC Dbutz,
Are you flying with default settings on the Easy fly model, it appears to be more docile than mine?
Thanks
Glenn

Hi Glenn, yes, it's the default settings on the Easy Fly. Small inputs is the key. The Easy fly should feel way more docile than the other models.
