I've been flying the Blade 450 3D about 3 times a day since its release and I've been having a blast with it. I was browsing around the "hop-ups" parts list on Horizon Hobby's site and found this upgrade motor: 440H Helicopter Motor 4200Kv

I picked one up and it came today. The installation was a simple drop-in affair, no soldering required.

For starters even just on spool-up the heli sounds more dangerous, I actually took a few steps farther back than I normally would. The collective response was aggressive before, but with this new motor it is VICIOUS! Full power punch-outs launch the heli up so fast it blurs like a model rocket. I was surprised and pleased to find that the gyro/tail servo are still able to keep the tail locked even with aggressive pitch changes.

The collective response is so crisp my normally sloppy attempts at tic-tocs are much neater. The increased head speed also makes the cyclic response even more crisp, bringing it closer to what I'm used to with the mCP X and Trex 250.

The increased power does create more heat and drain the battery a little faster. After a 5 minute sport flight, the battery and motor are pretty warm, but not too hot to touch. The ESC also gets warmer than it used to, but still only like lukewarm. Before the upgrade, a 5 minute sport flight would drain the battery down to 3.8V per cell. With the new motor, a 5 minute sport flight drains it down to 3.5V per cell. It's well worth it in my opinion.

Anyway, if you're looking for a very simple power upgrade for your Blade 450 (or 400 probably), I highly recommend this motor!

Just some FFF circuits, some loops and rolls, and maybe a sloppy tic-toc attempt or two.

I wonder how it would do in a B400. Should liven things up a bit more.

Walk on water long enough, eventually you will get your feet wet.

I did a little research and yes, it should fit right in the B400 as easy as the B450.

You could always add a tooth, that would increase your headspeed as well. Also get rid of the stock battery and get a 30C, that will help as well.

3800KV motor
10T pinion
140T main gear
2200 mah battery

Approx head speed 2700 rpm

Take that and add 1 tooth to the pinion and it will jump up to approx 2983 head speed. With plastic blade grips, I wouldn't go above that.

I'm using the 11T pinion and a 30C battery, the head-speed is so high it sounds straight-up dangerous.

On my Trex 450 Pro, I run about 3000 head speed. The fastest that I have heard of is 4000 head speed. At that speed, you better make sure everything is loctite good and stay clear. BTW, higher KV doesn't necessarily mean it is a stronger motor. Just means that it is spinning faster.

Yeah I'm just running a 10T pinion on my Trex 450 Pro, I'm not sure what the actual head-speed is on either heli.

That's interesting about motor Kv, either way it gives the B450 a lot more pop.

If you are running the 450M motor with a a 10T, looking around 2300 rpm. That is quite docile for a 450. I would run at least a 12T pinion.

For a battery, I would recommend a 30C 2200mah lipo.

cool, thanks for the advise! going higher is C rating would just make the battery last longer correct? i dont fly smack 3d or real amp-pushing maneuvers yet so it shouldnt be a problem.

I use the same: 2200mAh 30C.

A higher C rating doesn't mean increased flight time, it just allows the battery to release more power, faster.

mAh is what increases flight time, I use a 2500mAh 30C battery sometimes, but the center of gravity is slightly off with it.

How is your upgrade motor doing? I'm rebuilding my 450 and ordered the upgraded motor. How are your main gears doing? Did you use the pinion that came with the new motor?

iKon, because I am connected to my heli, are you?

Yes, I'm using the pinion that came with the new motor. And the yes the motor is holding up just perfectly, I love it.

I highly recommend it as a cheap and easy power upgrade.

The higher C rating will allow the battery to release energy more efficiently. (It is established by the internal resistance of the pack) The higher the C the cooler the pack will run which prolongs the life and allows you to charge faster if you have too. Just FYI.
