I,ve been flying a mini titan and a Great Planes Reactor 42" plane for 4 years with this radio with no problems.
I built a new Aero-works Extra 300 last September with a Scorpion S 4025-12, Ice 100, 17 x 8 prop, AR 7000, Specktrum DS821 servos on 6s 4500mah. First or second flight I noticed a slight wing tip once or twice. I thought I had to get used to this model. Third flight I lost 100% control from about 130 feet away. I did a range check (yeah, after the crash, start kicking now) and only got about 30 feet distance. I sent the radio in to Horizon and the replaced the RF board and sent me a gadget to check voltage and signal drop. Great service there!
I did a range check to 200 feet and still good. First flight I lost 100% control from about 650 feet. I never pluged in the gadget because I panicked when I saw the smashed LIPO and quickly unpluged it. Had I pluged in the gadget I would know what happened. Now I'm guessing if it was my fault because I got disoriented from being so far away. I don't thing this is the case because I was taking it easy, slow level flying.
I pluged in the gadget and did a load test, binding the control surfaces and thrashing the sticks. I did not run the motor (bent shaft and no prop)during the test. Voltage looked good. I don't remember the numbers because it was 10 months ago but it was well within limits. I think it droped 0.1 volts at most.
I went to the location where I crashed and my wife thrashed the sticks from where I fly. The only time I lost signal is if my body blocked line of sight to the transmitter 650 feet away.
Any recommendations? Should I get an external BEC? Should I trust this radio. Please help!!!

The DX7 and the AR7000 are ussually very solid and reliable.
If this combination was faithful and worked for you before, your problem lies in the new setup:

BEC power may not be clean or enough under load...
or your plane/RX has a RF Blind spot.

I don't like to use a BEC on anything larger that a 2 lbs foamy, or a 450 heli, that's me.

Don't like DS821 on anything more that a training or sport plane, too many output gears failures on record.
Now I'm guessing if it was my fault because I got disoriented from being so far away. I don't thing this is the case because I was taking it easy, slow level flying.
What can I say?
How many times have you lost orientation flying easy like you said in the last month, year? If zero, then dont guess yourself unless the scheme on the Extra was hard to see to begin with.

If everything checks ok, try the RX on a small foamy or cheap plane to check functionality and range. If RX the exterior looks damaged, send it in.

OR

Mount the motor, esc and radio a board or rig mimicking the Extra.
Do a ground test with the AR7000, the log recorder, and all servos pluged in. Put a your grount tester on a 360 holder/fixture, walk away and have someone slowly spin the rig to test all orientations. Check the log.
ALSO, Borrow someone else DX7 if you can, repeat the ground test or foamy test again to make sure is not your TX, just in case.

good luck

Thank you,
I didn't know about the DS821 servos. I'm going to have to duplicate the problem and isolate it before I am comfortable flying it again.
Anyone else have comments. I'm all ears.
