How are the helical main gears going?
Anyone using them & how are they going?

I installed a Scorpion 4525-520 LE motor in my ENV a while ago with Revco 13T pinion. Then a couple of weeks ago at a fun fly was told there was a clicking noise. Checked over & there was a tooth missing from the stock main gear, had 3 flights like that!!

However I've never been a fan of Revco pinions as they have sharp edges that wear out main gears quicker. Scorpion pinions have smoother edges & main gears last a lot longer with them. For some reason Scorpion don't make bigger than 12T! Had no choice but to use Revco 13T with the LE motor.

Thought maybe to use the NextD helical gears & pinions as they run smoother & won't wear as quickly. Plus as we know delrin is a lot stronger than moulded main gears.

However I've never really been a fan of helical gears due to the axial/side forces they exert on the main gear possibly flexing it & on the pinion/motor bearings. IMO double helical or herringbone like Mikado is the way to go as the helical halves cancel out the axial forces & are very smooth. Otherwise taller straight cut gears are the way to go.

I noticed there is some room above the main gear. It would be nice if NextD or an upgrade company made a straight cut delrin main gear that was 1-2mm thicker than the stock main gear which is 11mm thick therefore would be 12-13mm over all.

I'm also running the Scorpion 4525-520 LE motor with the NextD helical gear and 13T pinion.

I love those helical gears, they're quiet and very smooth running.

I'll second that.. Xera 4030 2.5Y (560Kv) on 12S. Helical main gear and 12T pinion.. Very quiet, smooth running.

Hi Taipan,
I use the same motor and running 13 t helical gear on it,
it has over 200 flights, no problems at all.
the main gear can,t flex, because its very stif.
the axial load on the motor bearings is so low and for radial bearings its even better to have some axial load

Thanks guys! I've always wondered if some axial load on the motor bearings is a good thing as with straight cut gears the motor shaft is free to move up/down & get worn away.

The stock gears suck as they're always out of round which makes meshing a PITA.

Are helical gears just for electrics? Maybe the quiet running feature isn't noticed with a loud 90 banging away? I have The Rave with YS90/Hatori. I do have a Logo 600 and it is amazingly quiet and smooth sounding with the herringbone gears. I believe the TDR I am waiting for will have helical as well. But it's an electric.

husafreak - the helical gears are only for the Electric.

Maybe some time down the road there will be some for the nitro.

Flew with the helical gears for the first time yesterday, flies smoother & more locked in than ever! Perhaps they generate less vibes that allow the Vbar to work better. Well worth it.
