Dad was there 71-72 I think. I know he came back when I was born but had to depart again. He graduated HS in 69, spent a year at LSU and went into the air force around the time he and mom got married. I sent him a link to this page so he can read it.

I am a war history buff and read alot of books on WW2, korea and Vietnam. My Grandfather (my moms' dad) is a retired Marine Corps Colonel who flew A-4's in Vietnam. He's been awarded, Bronze star, distinguished flying cross, legion a merit etc...Getting stories out of him is like pulling teeth. I asked him about his distinguished flying cross and he's like "I just made a bunch of dummy runs over some marines to keep the VC from over running them and carrier landed with 30 lbs of fuel left". I want the full narative but he gives me the short version...

Dad and I did get him on video telling some stories with dads video camera pen. He probably knew what we were doing but played along anyway and gave us some good stuff that I'll cherish the rest of my life. He's 80 now and doesn't have a whole lot of time left...

I'd love to hear your story's Fran. Have you written any down? If you have, I'd really like you to email them to me. You guys are heros and your stories need to be documented. I for one care to read them and am sure I'm not the only one.

Here's humerous one that comes to mind around Thanksgiving of 1967...I was 19 years old
PLEASE DO NOT COUNT OFF FOR SPELLING, PLEASE!!!! LOL
I had just received an in country RR to Tan San Nuht air force base just outside of Siagon. I had had just left for leave from the 2nd Marines at Ka Shang. It was about 0345 hrs that found me in the base's recording building. It was used for GI's to record all of the popular music of that time. NO I-PODS there. Just TEAC reel to reel tape recorders (of course everyone in country owned one...had to before you could DEROS, Date Eligable to Return from Over Seas. Had to have a Seagrams Seven ribbon, Seiko watch and your shortimers calendar filled out.....ANYWAYS.

I had always been out during the hours from around 1930 hours until around 0730 hours....so I was a night hawk.

Well back to the recording session. I had my giant headphones on listening to Franky Valley and the 4 Seasons (that I was recording). I must have feel asleep for awhile. and was awakened by someone shaking my shoulder. I removed my headphones to discover that the air base had been under a 122mm rocket attack for the past 20 minutes. I ran to the bunker and got there just in time for the all clear. God truly loves an idiot!! LOL

We had received over 78 rounds during that time period.

Ask your dad if he remebers Armed Forces Radio and the United OX-Cart commercials????

Dad and I like to play first person shooter games online. We've played Battlefield vietnam in the past. In game, while on the american air bases they would have clips playing that sounded like the radio broadcasts back then. Dad said that sounded like what he would hear playing all the time on the radio. I'll ask him about the OX-cart commmercials.High Voltage just works better

United OX-Carts...the anouncer was Kris Noel
She was on AFR (arm forces radio)

It was all like the movies show it and I try not to watch that junk. I did take my son to see; "WE WERE SOLDIERS"... the only reason was that he would see that soldiers live and die and it's not all hollywood. That was probably the most realistic depiction of the Awh Shaw Valley (again...spelling doesn't count).
