I did a range check per the manual and the radio failed the test. I bought it used so no warranty. Should I buy just the module or send it for an estimate? I am just assuming the module will be the problem.
Thanks

Could be the antenna, could be the module, could be the reciever or even the installation of the receiver.

I did the range check with two different receivers.
What do you mean "installation of rx". Position in the frame?
BTW: One of the rx I tested it on is a 6210 with the satelite.
Thanks

Which module is it? The one with the integrated antenna, or the one with the external wire and antenna that mounts in the 72mHz position?

If it's not the integrated antenna, there is an upgrade with new antenna and module case:

I think I would first try a new antenna or upgrade to the integrated antenna module. If that didn't work, then send it in.

I have the one with the integrated antenna like this one.
http://www.horizonhobby.com/Product...odID=SPMMSJR710

I can't seem to find the module without the rx. Is there a reason it is a package deal?

Since the only reason for the purchase would be to convert to DSM2 2.4GHz you have to have each part. So yes there is a reason it is packaged that way.

Having your present module repaired is the only way I know of to avoid it.
Send it ALL to Horizon for repair as you are guessing that it is the module.
You will find Horizon very reasonable and quite helpful.

Any time I seen a problem with range, I open the TX up, and make sure the wire that attaches to the threaded stud the antenna screws on to has not came loose. I saw this happen one time with an RC truck, the thing would work fine while you were around your feet, but if you got say 20 feet away the truck would take off, out of control. Turned out after opening the radio up, the TX (Pistal Grips Style Radio), the wire had came loose from the antenn base.

I was only able to purchase the new module housing with no module. Had to use my old module and put into the new housing.

I called Horizon and they suspect strongly it is a module issue so I shipped it out priority mail.
I was thinking about buying a 7000 rx with the module for $109 if I knew for a fact it was the module but better sense tells me to wait for the repair
I will post the outcome, thanks.

Update
Found a new Module with a AR7000rx for $99 and ordered it Monday, got it in today. Figured it was a good idea to have another rx on standby. Went thru the bind process on a couple of my helis, did the 30 pace bind button test, works perfect!
Horizon Hobby has not responded with a fix for the module I sent in yet. Just glad it wasn't the radio and my gamble paid off.
Thanks

HH has just emailed me that the work order has been completed and the item is being shipped back to me.
No indication as to repair cost or anything. I am very pleased with the quick turnaround and email notification with tracking number.

I have a similar issue and have tried two modules (the older with the antenna coax running outside of the antenna base and connecting to a sma connector and the newer type with the integrated antenna). So yes keep us posted on that. Thanks.

**UPDATE**
A package arrived today from Horizon Hobby, opened it up, a new DSM2 Module.
They found that the module I sent in had a busted case and broken antenna. They mentioned that using the module with the broken antenna could have overloaded the board in the module. They said that even though the damage was not factory related, they replaced the module out of the spirit of customer service.
BTW: This was only a 2 week complete turnaround.
WOW! Thanks Horizon Hobby!

444PowerStroke-
Glad to hear it all worked out in a positive direction buddy!
Horizon Hobby has always "Stood up" and provided customer support!

I Fly "only" JR Radios with the reliance that HH will stand behind the product and offer support at the time of need!

Plus I don't want to fly any radio that starts with (FU)
JR all the way buddy!
