Picked up a 3D Plus and after not flying a compass for some time (last one was a Knight 3D), have to say this is one of the BEST flying helis. very very stable and predictible. has an issue at first with the ball links on the tail blade grips being tight, but resolved that by a small spacer on the ball link and resized the links and smooth as could be now...

low stance is nice too, but going to try a raptor x50 mainshaft to bring it even lower

heli is just faster in general. has a lower stance and a lower cg which equates to faster rolls and flips.

I have to ask out of curiosity as this subject has been brought up recently among some of the reps.I do not mean to hijack the threadjust trying to get info to help improve things

Why do you feel there is an issue with parts availability?I see you have a LOGO and you can only get Logo parts from 1 place. So why the concern over Compass parts?

I have been flying Compass helicopters for five years now (since long before I was flying for them).

I own five Compass helicopters (Knight Pro, Knight 3D, Atom, 6HV, and Odin II).

I have never had a Compass machine out of service due to lack of parts.

Ever!

i think the issue with parts avaibility is that the us distributor for compass parts seems to change as often as my 4yr old changes her clothes, lol...

not that i personally have really had an issue sourcing parts, but it just seems that not everyone who carries compass parts support carries the entire line. amain and nankin seem to have a good selection, but it appears that amain may be dropping the compass stuff as all the parts are now discounted (which leads me to believe that they are in the process of clearing them all out). that will only leave nankin to carry them.

while other shops carry some compass stuff, they dont have parts for the 3d plus, odin or 6hv, but rather still have parts from the knight 3d or knight sport...

i think if compass had their own us based presence, it wouldnt be an issue. perhaps they can work on a partnership with someone in the near future to get that going?

just my 2 cents

That is essentially Nankin.

Amain is most likely dropping the line because they aren't getting near the sales volume specifically for compass that Nankin does. Nankin has worked much harder than any other Compass dealer in the past IMO and that is why they dominate the US market for Compass stuff. Just look at Amain's team pilots, I think I saw only one flying a 6HV at a funfly whereas Nankin has a slew of US based pilots that have done a ton of traveling to events and providing support online for the last year or so. Nankin's pilots are also much more heavily involved in testing and R&D of new stuff so it's no wonder why Amain just gave up.

RAK402,

What is the differenve between the 6HV (Compass 3D) and the Odin II? As far as flight, parts that generally break, setup, performance, etc.

The Odin is a .90 sized Nitro machine. Although there is an FBL head for it, I think it has only been released as a flybarred machine. Although it is a long as the other .90 sized machines I have, it sits very low, which a vertically compressed CG. It is much quicker, from a cyclic standpoint, than my Raptor .90 3D. The fan is electric, rather than driven off of the motor crankshaft. This is intended to allow the 10% or so of the horsepower from the engine that is usually used to drive the fan to be put to better used driving the main rotor and tail. Mine is set up to be mixed with throttle on a separate channel. This has worked extremely well, so far.

The 6HV is a 600 (.50) sized Electric machine. The HV stands for High Voltage (it runs on 12S). It also sits lower than most .50 sized machines, having a vertically compressed CG. Although it was the first electric machine like this, it has set a trend since its introduction over a year ago, with both Align and Outrage following with lower, sleeker designs, also using 12S and with vertically compressed CG's.

The 6HV is incredibly quick and powerful-flip and roll rate are approaching those of a quick 450.

The 3D Plus is a .50 sized nitro model. I do not have one of these yet, so I cannot comment, personally, on the performance. They are the next step in the evolution of Compass nitro machines in this size (Knight 50/Pro, Knight 3D, 3D Plus). The roll and flip rate is very good and they are very light (several of my friends who have them have stated that the 3D Plus is the best flying nitro .50 they have ever flown). They have some of the same design characteristics of the Knight 3D and the Odin II, in terms of the low, sleek style, compressed vertical CD, damped motor mounts to isolate the motor vibration from the frame, etc.

All Compass models use a cog-belt driven tail with a nice high tail ratio.

In terms of normal wear and tear, I have had to replace the ball links for the tail rotor and, on the nitro machines, throttle (I am running a governor). I have experienced no wear on other parts, so far. I have crashed the 6HV very, very severely, once. This took out the main rotor shaft, flybar (this was before conversion to FBL), boom, gear, etc. and damaged the side frames (which I repaired). The crash cost about $150 to repair.

"I kind of like having more than one store to buy from ........it keeps the prices down" - Its on

You gotta remember, the competition is who keeps the prices low, not competing stores. Compass has worked their butts off to offer both fair and balanced prices in every venue that carries them (aka MAP pricing) which benefits everyone since you find the same price everywhere you look. You don't waste hours on end trying to find it for pennies cheaper when you can just order it from one place. you also deal with a lot less "out of stock" notifications because they know how to manage their demand for certain items.

But I digress; everyone goes through shortages and out of stock periods which really sucks, but it's the name of the game. When you sell stuff you can live without, you are at the whim of the customer and it's extrememly difficult to predict (especially in this economy).

Align basically shoots themselves, their distributors/shops, and customers in the foot by having tiered pricing. It makes competition between stores horrible for all involved except only the biggest of shops, and it makes it into a total cut-throat business when it truly shouldn't be. As soon as a new model comes out, the old one basically gets dumped and everyone with the hot potato gets burned. You also spend all day trying to find the cheapest price and get screwed by having to deal with hidden drawbacks and poor included items (i.e.-electronics). At least that's my take on it and why I no longer prefer/fly their machines.

Rumor has it that Compass will be announcing new dealers soon. I do not know if they will answer directly to Compass, or to Nankin. I'll continue to buy from Nankin because they are one of the best hobby shops I have ever bought from.
