Drummond Island is great and remote.

Cop: Sir, have you been drinking? Driver: Why? Is there a fat girl in my backseat?

do they allow you to go wilderness camping? Looking to avoid campsites.,
Also, do you know if you need a permit to do this. THanks!

Wilderness camping is allowed and encouraged! A camp registration permit is required but since it's free, it's no big deal. You can stop at any DNR office and pick one up.

If you stay to the eastern side of the island, seeing other people rarely happens unless you're there on a holiday weekend and even then there aren't many. Try this website for more information (click on maps and then select east region).

We usually camp around marker 24 or at Marble Head and it's amazing. There's also a small harbor between Glen Cove and Marble Head that's great... the harbor is only a couple hundred feet across and we camp on the lake side bit of land. The harbor water is deep and great for swimming. You have to keep a look-out to find it but it's one of the best spots on the island.

There's a couple of small grocery stores on the island but we usually buy most of our supplies on the mainland where it's cheaper.

Having a 4-wh drive, quads or dirt bikes is almost mandatory for maximum fun. There are just so many trails on the island it would be hard to explorer them all. I've been going there each summer for the last 15 years and still haven't seen everything.

Thanks man.
One last question--do you know what MI's regulations are regarding wilderness camping in State vs. National parks in the state?
The MI DNR site isn't very user friendly.

Thank you for your help!

My favorite place is Grand Island off Munising in Lake Superior. I have biked it and hiked it several times. Also, there are a few campgrounds in that area. What kind of camping are you interested in? Remote wilderness, campsite? Tent or RV? Also, there is Craig Lake, Sylvania Wilderness Track, Porcupine mtns, list goes on.

Edit; oops.. sorry, saw now that you are wanting some wilderness stuff. Porcupine Mtns is very nice. Another is McCormick Tract. TEll me what you want to do.

I don't really know, that's what I was hoping you could help me with.

I'm 17, going alone, and have a one man tent and a motorcycle.

My parents are fine with it, not too keen on the idea but I feel the need to get out for a while, once school ends, to to get a little perspective on things.

Definitely want to go to the Porc. mountains, from what I hear they are beautiful.

I got a chunk of time off work from July 10-22 and this is when I plan on going...

+1 for Grand Island off of Munising. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a great place to see. You should also take in Tahquamonon Falls.

Quite possibly the best in rugged camping would be to take the ferry over to Isle Royal and spend a weekend there.

There are also quite a few nice places to camp around Pete's Lake and surrounding vicinity which is off of Federal Forest Hwy 13.

Enjoy the sites.

And if you make it my way, look us up for some great flying!

I'm not sure on the regulations. I know that on Drummond Island, you can camp anywhere you want on public land... which is a LOT of area. Like I said before, unless you want to see other people it's not hard to be very, very remote. I've never even seen a fire ban on the island so your good there as well. Just be sure to keep your campsite clean or you WILL have a bear experience. There is also a population of wolves on the island but sightings are rare... unlike the deer which you will quickly get tired of seeing.
