Well unfortunately I got the word today that our LHS is closing it's doors in a month or two. Larry is a great guy and it will be a shame to see him go. This guy would ask us what we needed all the time so he could stock stuff for us. I guess the internet sales and the failing economy is taking it's toll on everyone.
I know that every now and then he gets on here and reads some of the threads so, Larry, if you are reading this, thanks for the years of great service and friendship at the flying field. Don't be a stranger at the field! Good luck in whatever new venture you choose.

Support your LHS guys so it dosen't go away. It's gonna suck trying to get fuel now!

That is what I'm always telling the guys here, start by your LHS, even if they are a few bucks more, then if they can't service you, go to the your favorite on line store.

Mine closed a while ago. But then I found out they just moved. It is a treat for me when I am able to go to the place they moved to, even though its an extra 10-15 min to go there. They were in the perfect location before the move.

I still consider myself very lucky.
I have 2 good shops about 5 minutes away each.
I hope it stays that way.
I really try to buy from them when I need anything.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

LHS Closing
What I like about this post is the concern for the Person not just the loss of a hobby shop!

That is a great idea but when they sell NOTHING you ever need, it is hard to support them. Mine has very little of what I need and it seems that when they order something it takes 3-4 days longer than if I order it myself! Hard to keep up the support but I try.........Ron

Electric benefits from shops closing because it's hard to get fuel shipped at a good cost . Most lhs that stay have online site also . You have a greater cut throat opportunity having an online shop because you can sell volumes . This is only going to get worse for lhs ,they need to keep up with times to survive and the old school guys lose . It sucks but it's the truth .

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

One of our popular LHS owners just passed away. But he mostly did it as a hobby and not too concerned with making money. Which is probably the only way you can run a hobby shop without an internet store. He didn't stock much heli stuff but nobody could beat his prices. Especially when other shops tried to open near him. Fuel was half the price of RobMeTown.

Same here. We've got 5 guys with multiple align helis. We spend hundreds of dollars each month to keep them going. Though we've told the RobmeTown owner multiple times that we can keep stock moving for him, he chooses not to carry our stuff. He prefers Eflight stuff and car stuff instead...

Remember some distributors require a bulk order to setup acct to get products and then if items don't sell no return so lost inventory . Also some require a dollar amount and they pick what you get then it is stuff that doesn't sell . I understand why lhs sticks with big distributors but if you order and they make a couple bucks not usual 35% mark up at least you will go there more .You wash my hand and I wash yours theory

I do a combination of internet and LHS. I like to support them, but I am on a limited budget. So Depending if I need the part quick, or the difference in cost is substantial, then I will go with the internet. Of course internet can cause it's own problems as well. I am dealing with a complaint with x-heli on some 450 parts and one response I received I thought was a bit rude. On an actual answer for my complaint, well that hasn't happened yet.

Our LHS here is stuck on Eflight. I have asked why not support larger Helis, at least Aligns stuff. I get the same thing, "those things are too expensive". All he supports is car and cheap foames, he even supports train stuff, granted its covered in 2 year old dust. He forgets that if you don't try to support AND promote the hobby, it will in time die on you. This in particular makes no sense since I live in a Military town with 18-25 year olds spending boat loads of money on other things like sport bikes, tuned up imports etc. Heli guys are the minority here, and with the closest Heli shop 1 Hour away I would rather order online and get it with free shipping the next day

You are right about LHS's only supporting cars and some airplanes such as E-flite stuff. Most of them around here are the same way. We only have one true LHS that supports everything on the West side of the Valley.

LHS support, in a diffrent way!
It seems the longer I am into Helis, the less my LHS stocks to fulfill my evolving needs. For instances upgrade parts or high end parts or blades! Another aspect of support I find myself doing regularly is to mention the name, location and a good word about the LHS to new flyer or someone that has stopped to watch! I will even hand out business cards of my favorite shops in the area! We need to keep them around! It’s nice to be able to spend that excess pocket change build-up on something to fill the flight box!

I belive that LHS, at least in my area, just don't understand or fly Helis and therefore stick to what they do know, cars and cheap planes they can sell quick. I have asked general questions about garden variety Helis and get the "well let me look it up" or "I'm not sure..". Our LHS here is in decline, and quite honestly his prices are high, even the TESTOR paints he stocks are cheaper at the Hobby Lobby chick store down the street. I'll give an example. I wanted to repaint a canopy and went to the LHS to buy spray paint in metallic colors, almost $6 a can for 3oz. Went to Autozone and got the same metallic color automotive grade (much better)color for $7.25 for 11oz. I'm sorry, but our LHS is out of touch and is on life support...

I got one here too, I swear do they breed? I literally felt insulted going to one of the closer ones. I told him that I am building a Trex 600 and he asked me if I am good enough to fly something that big? You got to be kidding me, right? I wanted to ask him if he is really that stupid!

I have been in this hobby for longer than I can care to remember, I am attaching something I wrote back in 2003 when our LHS sold, it did close down shortly thereafter due to illness of the new owner. But hobby shops are special, support them as much as you can.

[I]As we close on the year of 2003, I have to reflect on some things that happened. The Cubs didn’t make it to World Series, all because of one fan grabbing the ball from a playable hit, not only did he jinx the Chicago Cubs but within a week all the Cub food stores closed in Denver.

However, we all must face change. I have been in the hobby for 15+ years and have only known one Hobby Shop, Blue Yonder. This was not your typical shop. It was the hobbyist bar or shall I say the modelers “Cheers”, and Richard Brink was the friendly bartender. I spent many an evening there with Richard tending bar, and Norm (aka Dave), sitting on the stool at the end of the bar. I have even thought of joining Mountain Dew Anonymous. We will miss Richard, and wish him well, although I wish he would stay in the Denver area, who else am I going to shoot Touch and Go’s with. You see this was not a typical hobby shop, it was Richards Shop. One where any modeler could go into with their latest attempt at building and Richard would say, “Put er up on the counter and let’s have a look see.” Out would come tools and Richard would cheerfully make everything right on that model amongst the countless customers and soda pops. When he was done you the owner of the airplane or helicopter would proudly walk out with a completed flying machine. You see the shop was not just a place to buy stuff, it was a gathering place, a place to discuss the past weekend’s flying and plan on the next weekends outing. The shop is in good hands. Jim has taken over the reigns of Blue Yonder and will keep on the same tradition, stocking the pop machine with Mountain Dew.
Good Luck on retirement Richard![I]

It just comes down to the Owner and operator of the shop. Ours here loves RC Nitro and electric cars, so the rest of us either have to like it too or we are on our own. Othr have asked to stock REAL heli stuff, at least the basics, blades, gears and shafts.. but he will not.

RM3,

I know exactly the shop you are talking about. My brother is stationed at Ft Hood there and lives in Copperas Cove. I was visiting over Christmas and stopped in. My first thought after the half second it takes to look around, was wow....how does this guy stay in business. Both of my brothers have been stationed there at times over years and way back, it wasn't a bad shop so I was surprised this last Christmas. I don't if its a different owner or what but its really gone down hill.

A guy came in after me with some used helis. looked like the old Shoguns and was asking for help or info to get it going. The guy behind the counter showed slightly more than zero interest in helping him. I tried to suggest he get the guy an Align SA airframe or "Something" as he already had servos and motors and stuff. No dice, all he wanted to do was try to sell the guy a full blown RTF and was rude about it. I had to shake my head and walk away. It was too bad I leaving soon so I could've helped the guy.
