They do some pretty cool stuff inside controlled enviroments like that. Position sensors around the rooms allow very precise control, far more than just a GPS outside.

This stuff is just the beginning too. This multi rotor technology will be a fun ride for a long time. Enjoy!

The beatings will continue until morale improves...

Its more than that...

The camera system in that room is way more important...probably used for targeting and plotting trajectory. The INU systems on each quad are used for feedback and to stabilize the quad.

As with many autonomous platforms you must have a stable platform that goes up, down, left and right very well along with staying level. From there you can get a computer system to drive it like a bus and do what you want....over simplified yes but why go into so many details...

This tech would be awesome in space...different platform but imagine putting together a shuttle or something else autonomously like this...startrek style

Its really not fair to compare what they do, to what we do. They
have what is sometimes unlimited budgets and sometimes they have to beg for parts. BUT I am betting that Penn a Ivy league school has lots of resources. The other thing they can do is rebroadcast GPS in the room and do a differential GPS system which takes out 99.99% of the errors in GPS.
They have all these Ivy leaguers, all brainiacs sitting around helping each other. To get into one of these ivy league schools you have to be like a 520 IQ, and probably Dad works for NASA. They were probably making UAVs out of toasters 10 years ago when they were 8.
This ISNT like Dr. Tim and I sitting in his garage drinking a root beer and brainstorming. Not only that but the profs there to help them and who at
this point have been to all the navigation RC conferences all over the world and have cards for everybody in the industry. AND not only THAT but since the Proffs are 75% Chinese they KNOW everybody in CHina Taiwan working on stuff like this. Its not what you know but how many rich donors you have from the field you are teaching.
I went to a Cal state school and it was very good but we had to beg for everything we got and we didnt get much. And the stuff we were doing was cutting edge with microprocessing.
But Even with all that Ivy League school money and help those systems they were using were probably 90% complete by donating vendors to showcase whats coming soon. They probably asked the students/Proffs to write the last few algorithms needed for communication.
So dont downplay what you all are doing, its an exciting field and wether your a hobbyist or building a business you all are helping in a field that is growing really quick!
