For reference, low cost way to go FBL on your SDX

Just sharing...

Converted my old SWM SDX to flybarless using BeastX controller
- stock SDX plastic head
- long balls from swashplate
- stock long pushrods reinforced with CF tube (3mmOD x 2mmID)
- cut stock wash-out arms, washout hub from Mikado (I used customized but similar hub)
- all set-up made as per instructions, sports control behavior, 50% gain (tail).

1st flight testing done at local field. Initial impressions - flies like a flybarred but stable as an FBL... true to it's slogan (and name) - BE Absolute STable

davehour: thanks!

blackbird: I used the long balls from the stock swashplate so I need to get another 135 swashplate so I had to use the metal one from my Eagle3 as temporary solution But I'm converting this SDX to 120deg (I think better for FBL/smack flying).

edit: @blackbird, ball links I am using the stock Hirobo 2mm ball links, would this suffice? or do I need to change to thicker ones (i.e. Mikado, Align, etc)? thanks.

Test flown I see, have you tried any idle up flying to see if it does anything weird yet.

@blackbird: thanks OK I'll try that when I switch to 120deg.

@bigwolf1: 2nd flight (no vids) we did some smooth big maneuvers like loops, rolls on idle2 (1950rpm) so far so good though the setting is "sports" on control behavior. I can't push it yet since I'm still using the stock 2mm pushrods and ball links. this weekend I'll put on the 2.5mm rod/link and try the "pro" setting and do some mild 3D. still, it did better on the first flight compared to that Turnigy VBAR from HobbyK

Update: reinforced the 2mm Hirobo rods with 3x2 CF tubes and some CA, did some couple of 3D and she works well. Now I'm using EDGE 603mm blades and she's superb. Control behavior is now at "pro" settings and it suits my flying style

Hope to get it on video sooon.

Observations:
1. My cyclic and tail servos runs hotter than usual, initially set the 9255s at 200Hz rate while the BLS251 at 533Hz. Now I set them at 165Hz and 333Hz, respectively.
2. Battery consumption is higher, I can now only get 2 (confident) flights from my 1800mAh pack, before I can get 3.

My Setup:
- Hirobo SDX
- converted FBL head
- S9255s cyclic, S9250 throttle, BLS251 tails
- Edge 603mm FBL blades, 95mm CF tails (MSC)
- Align 55HZ, Funtech (F3c) muffler
- 1450/1750/1950 rpm on Align governor
- max pitch +15/-15, idle2: -12,0,+12
- Beastx - "pro" setting, 165Hz cyclic, 333Hz tail
- Futaba 12MZ on R6008HS
- 15A UBEC running 5.2V, TP 3S 1800mAh

time to upgrade to a larger pack like 5000mah.. or 3600mah. it use's much more power for the controls since it's direct, with no bell mixers.

update.

Just tested on "extreme" settings. Still the aileron and elevator response is a bit slow, rolls and aileron tic-tocs are faster on my T600ESP with 3G. I think "transmitter" mode is the best way to go.

Test video and sports flying with it this morning at the field...

@bigwolf: yep you're right need to upgrade my flight pack, and so are the servos I'm using... Futaba's 9255s won't cut it anymore, FBL systems really flies nice with 0.10s servos Looking at Savox 1258s anyone tried them yet on the microbeast?

No question. Put the BeastX into transmitter mode. It's really the only way to get the rates like you want them.

When you upgrade the servos, go with BLS255HV's.
