Protos 500 setup for sport use
Hello.

Can someone please tell me of a good setup (batteries and pinion) and the general suitability for an MSH Protos Carbon for sport flying where I can get the best flight times.

My other machine is a Logo 500 that gives 10 minutes easily.

Also does anyone have experience with the BeastX in an MSH and do you use the ESC's BEC for power.

I have only ever owned 550-600 size helis.

Many thanks

I don't have experience flying for 10 minutes. But as with any heli, the lower the head speed (up to a point), larger the pack (up to a point), and operating in the motor and ESC's best efficiency range, should yield very long flight times. That being said, I've read of some running theirs at 2400 head speed. I think there is even a video of someone running at that head speed for 10 minutes on youtube or somewhere.

To get that headspeed and run the motor and esc in a healthy throttle range, 12T pinion (requires 4mm pinion adapter), 6S 3000mah lipo.

I would definitely get the kit that includes the motor and MSH branded YGE ESC. The ESC is very good and can handle very low throttle ranges.

Using the head speed calculator on ready heli:
Spoolup with Governor @ 65%: 2199
Spoolup with Governor @ 70%: 2264
Spoolup with Governor @ 75%: 2328
Spoolup with Governor @ 80%: 2393
Spoolup with Governor @ 85%: 2458
Spoolup with Governor @ 90%: 2522

I don't know how well the heli will fly at 2200 rpm, but it does fly very good at 2400 for sport flying. Some on the other site have testified to this. Hope this helps.

I am running a head speed of 2200 with a 13tooth pinion and castle lite 75 ESC. Battery power is coming from 6s 2600 or 3000 batteries. I am powering the Beastx directly from the reciever. I am a sport flyer so it handles my loops, rolls, and inverted hovering just fine. The most I have gotten in flight time with this setup has been 10 min 20 sec. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Sounds good.

I'm very tempted to buy one as I was considering a 700 size heli but I have had two recent crashes that have eroded my confidence. I'm not sure I can take a 700 at the moment. The Protos has always interested me and I have never flown anything smaller than a 550.

Is it hard to put a 12 or 13 tooth pinion on a Protos?

How do they hover ? (flybarless and flybar)
