Rave ENV Crash – Did my heli go temporarily insane?
My Rave 90 ENV Nitro went in hard this weekend. There were 3 of us who saw it go in, and none of us has ever seen a crash so sudden and violent.

It was a couple minutes into the 3rd flight of the day. I had just done a stall turn and was heading back across the field when suddenly it shook violently and slammed into the ground. It was like a huge, mad rottweiler grabbed the heli in it’s fangs, shook it violently in its death grip, and then slammed its victim mercilessly to the ground.

Below are some pictures of the carnage.

What I do know: I know it wasn’t dumb thumbs, and I know it wasn’t a mechanical failure. If it was mechanical, it would have simply felt weird, or wouldn’t have responded correctly to input. But that wasn’t the case.

Was it the BeastX? I don’t think so, but I don’t think you can rule it out. Has anyone else had this happen due to a BeastX???

Was it a radio hit? Well, could you get a radio hit on a 2.4 system that would drive all the servos crazy for a couple seconds? I don’t really know.

So – I am open to your theories. What do you think it might have been?

I know I will probably never find out what it was, and there is nothing worse than not knowing, since there is nothing to fix or avoid in the future. But I would like to toss around some ideas so I can at least try to avoid this in the future.

Here is my setup:
JR 921 RX
Scott Grey ReactorX
Relion 5200 Li-Ion Battery
BeastX Flybarless System
JR 8717 Servos

Thanks for your help!

Where all the links on the heli when you got to it? If you had a head link pop off in flight it will do as you said with a FBL unit. Just a thought.

Specifically which link popped off for you guys?

I didn't think a link popping off could make it shake so violently.

I thought the violent shaking had to be the servos all going nuts.

But, God, would I love it if it was a link issue - I could go to all rocket city links or something and prevent that in the future!!!

Main link to the blade grips: If it was the main link to the blade grips, wouldn't that blade simple weather vane and you would lose controll?

Just not sure if a link popping off could lead to the tossing and shaking of the heli...

My VERY first suspect would be the regulator system. They are by far the weakest link in our systems and always will be.

Is the Beast X loose on its tape?

From what you describe it was electronic for sure. Sounds like the Beast X went nuts. Low voltage sure would do it though.

Sorry about that. I HATE stuff like this. I can live with a dumb thunb, stuff like this drives you nuts I know.

[/Where all the links on the heli when you got to it? If you had a head link pop off in flight it will do as you said with a FBL unit. Just a thought.]

This was my first thought.

I had almost the same exact thing happen to me. Did a stall turn from my left coming back across in front of me and just as it passed the heli looked like it flew into hurricane. It started shaking from all axis left, right, up, down and then just a straight out nose dive into the ground.

When I got to the heli is was sad, complete carnage. Before I picked it up I carefully inspected the wreckage and noticed that one of the links going to the head, ball and everything was missing.

With a flybarless system, it trying to compensate for the initial loss of control I beleive could create the violent shaking.

After reassembing the heli there have been no more instances so I am convinced I lost a link. Damage was very similar to yours... of course many crashes show this type of damage.

No, It would flutter loudly and you would lose all control of collective as well as cyclic. A fluttering blade is a very distinct sound. Does not sound like you heard that from your description...........Ron

if you loose a link in level flight without much collective input it will not do anything crazy, if you are hauling it across the field and you loose a link it will go flying hand grenade on you.

Did you test the regulator/battery post crash?

I have a pile of 921's and none of them ever went batty like that. Not that it couldn't happen but I dont remember a problem with that specific receiver.

Power system sounds up to snuff but a bad connection somewhere could have caused a problem.

2.4 systems dont normally "glitch" like 72mhz systems, they either work or fail and most (not all) of the time they fail its a power issue.

I've had one of the cyclic leads back out of my vbar in the past and it caused the heli to shake as I fought it all the way to the ground. I say that to say this. What lead is plugged into the furthest forward on the reciever that looks cracked/broken or otherwise not all the way in?High Voltage just works better

I have seen that with a head link popping off, and can imagine a flybarless controler going south causing this as well.
Sorry for the loss none the less.

i" experience the same thing you describe, with the rave 450 using the mini v-bar i just upgrade the firm ware' and was outside hovering
and it do a few funky and slam into the ground full negative

but since the beast-x start making a bad name for it self i point to it
failure.

I'd bet on losing a link as well. Dunno if it's in the head or down by the servos, but I'd bet on up in the head.Nick Crego
