Would you use a step down for a tail servo, if you are using a 6.6 volt life pack?

Like these servos.

I have used both the align 650 and 620 on LiFE 6.6 with no step downs perfectly fine. I am pretty sure all the Align servos can take that voltage safely.

I would not go without the step down with either the 9254 or the 8900.

I have a 1290 on the tail of both helis.
That is a 650 before Align stamps their name on it.

No step down.

Both helis are also FBL and no step down on cyclic either.

6.6 LiFe and no regulator is my favorite set up.

I literally never use the word literally right.

Its just not worth the risk! Step downs are not expensive and there is no performance gain to be had from running them above 5v. I won't even run regulated 6v to mine!

Give your tail servo a break, use a step down lead.

60% of the time, it works every time!

A LiFE will output 6.6Vdc at full charge and if it's a larger battery, might take a while to drop.
A simple stepdown cable will not do the trick, as these use power diodes.
Despite that the diode's average rating is a voltage drop of 0.7Vdc, most will drop less then that.
0.5Vdc ~ 0.6Vdc is average.
Spent a bit more and use a proper regulator.
One of them is the Gryphon: http://www.gryphon-mall.com/product.php?id_product=39

That's just an example and there are others.

I ran 6.6volts to a 650 and it burnt out after a hundred flights I now use a step down, I was lucky it didn't crash me.
