Some time ago I mentioned that I have serious problems with the autorotation unit. Initially I wanted to buy a new unit. Unfortunately it was not to be found in Europe. So I decided to buy only the auto hub sleeve. The new one had more play with respect to the main shaft as compared with the part that came with the kit. Still after some flying I noticed that it was locked again… The good thing this time is that I can unlock the unit by forcing the rotation in the right direction while applying torque between the main gear and the blade holders.

Q1) Why the autorotation hub keeps locking?

Q2) How can I solve the issue?

Q3) The outer diameter of the auto hub sleeve is smaller even than the one of raptor 50. Will the new N5C have a larger autorotation hub to deal with the high torque form 55 engines?

Im having the same issue all I do to stop it from locking know is pour some try flo oil down onto the one way and it seems to free it up.

Auto Hub
I have an N5. This is from Matt's web site.

Auto Hub-
Do not try to remove vertical play, this play was designed into the unit to allow the auto hub to float and spin freely. Removing this play will affect your auto-rotation performance. Also the auto hub can be installed as it appears in the manual or flipped upside down in case the one-way is installed in the opposite direction.

Auto Hub locking up – This is a known issue, some people are experiencing this and some are not. If you are experiencing this, here is a list of things to try.

Clean all of the grease out of the one way and apply a light oil
Lightly sand auto hub inner sleeve until OD is between 11.96-11.98mm
Loctite inner sleeve to main shaft (helps close the gap between OD of main shaft and ID of auto hub sleeve).

First of all thank you for replies!

I read the recommendations on Matt’s website site before buying the helicopter.

Judging by the number of reports regarding this issue I would say that this has to do with the development of the helicopter. Somehow those who have this problem should get the defective part(s) for free. I guess you do not get bankrupt because of that. It happens that I have a caliper that has a precision of 0.1mm. Why should I buy a caliper with a higher precision for sanding the auto hub sleeve?

Beside, who can guarantee that this is the real issue or simply the materials used do not meet the requirements?

Before fitting the helicopter with the second sleeve I cleaned and oiled the mechanism as described on Matt’s website.

Now…

Today the wind is too strong for flying, but I went to the club to do some testing.

Step1) unlock the autorotation unit
Step2) add some drops of “microlon precision oiler”
Step3) put the helicopter in hover
Step4) land and verify if the auto is locked

Unfortunately the autorotation unit was locked.

Step5) unlock the autorotation unit
Step6) remove the autorotation hub sleeve.
Below are two pictures of the sleeve. Note that the photos are after cleaning the oil off the sleeve. The second photo is taken rotated a few degrees. The reason for that is to rule out possible artifacts due to reflection of light.

As you can see the there are clear vertical striations/ indentations on the metal. Why? I do not know. But comparing again with the autorotation sleeve from my raptor50 I noticed that in the later case there were no vertical striations on the sleeve. Inspecting the first autorotation sleeve (the one that locks even to the main shaft) I noticed the same vertical marks like fingerprints where the hard contact between the sleeve and the one way bearing shoes was applied.

Maybe changing something like the sleeve material or by using a larger mechanism we can solve the issue.

What I can do is to sand down until I see that the vertical indentations are gone. Perhaps that will decrease the diameter enough. Still, I am not sure that this solution.

Hello Bogdan,

Contact your dealer or distributor for your area and ask them for the auto hub unit with 14mm OD sleeve. This auto hub unit has been coming in the kits now for quite some time and is bulletproof. I've been running it on the E6 with a 7 horse motor and have not been able to lock it up. Unfortunately I think you have one of the older kits and for that I apologize. The old auto hub has been working perfectly for many others but some locking issues have been seen in sporadic instances. All of my testing was done with an OS50 where everything was holding up fine. When the OS55 came out I think the auto hub started having issues. The ever increasing power of nitro and electric has haunted many manufacturers over the years. Weather or not the manufacturer reacts and fixes the inadequacy usually determines if the manufacturer is to survive.

Sorry again for the lockups. As long as I am owner of Synergy I will do my best to stay on top of things like this.

I got it, it´s 200-407
I´ll go for it, My N5 is one of the first kits with 12mm sleeve.
This new larger auto hub is the upgrade I´ve been waiting for.

Make sure you check with the hobby shop on the OD of the sleeve before you order. Also the aluminum portion of the auto hub has been lightened so the look is slightly different as an indicator.

Indeed my autorotation unit is with 12mm sleeve. The 14mm system will work better being able to take more torque. With that fixed, N5 helicopter could be considered the toughest on the market. No question about that.
