I hope this is a good one. I like the combined functions and I didn't read any bad reviews of this unit. I have the red label Min-Air Tach I'll probably sell. Who is using the Bantam Check Master II?

I think you will be disappointed when comparing the two ! There is no better tach than the MA as far as seeing through it since it has the disc and not the drum.

I am waiting for the liquid crystal shutter tach.

My friend has one and it does a good job with helis (not quite as nice to view as the MA, but it does the job.) I did have a bit of an issue trying to tach small propellers on a plane with it, but the heli side was fine.

I'd buy one after my experience with it.

It's a nice multi-tasking tool. I would not buy one just to replace an MA. This same Japanese design predates the MA. It works fine but is harder to see through.

It will only be used for heli so I think the drum won't bother me. Anything else you particularly do or dont like on it?

Keep your red MA until you can compare the two. I thought about buying a Check Master for the other functions. Bantam is good stuff.

MA red tach
Has the MA red tach been discontinued, #3000-50? I went to heliwholesaler.com and they don't list it anymore and searched the site. I have one of the old blue #0524 units. Pardon me if it has been answered elsewhere.

Call MA directly and see if they have any more. They were on sale for $89 recently.

Who is using the Bantam Check Master II
Used one yesterday for the first time...not mine.

Pros
>The additional functions making it a multitool vs a dedicated single tool...especially if into planes as well.
>Up to 4k RPM
>Onboard 4.8V NiMh or NiC. Forgot which one.

Cons
>A little on the bulky side.
>No carry strap nor noticed any place to attach one.

>>Instructions does not go into details as to what to do with displayed information (servo function).

Have not used the other one mentioned to compare.

Hi

The drum is not the issue really, it is the small view finder. ESP if you are wearing glasses/dark glasses.

In every other way it is superior.

I have the old 1999 rpm MA tach and am going to get a new one soon..... 1999 rpm a bit limiting now days.

Paul

Actually what he means is to change the 1 to a 2. Most nitros are in the <2000 RPM's range and most electrics are >2000RPM's.

Hi guys

It is not so easy......

With a <2000 machine, you are 'counting' 2 blades.

So when you tach a high revving machine and use this X 2 plan, you can't be sure if you have 'counter' 3 or 4 blades.

If you know the ball park rpm, it would help.

Paul

I'm going to make do with the blue MA until the liquid crystal shutter tachs come out. There is some ambiguity especially with small heli's. If I read 1200 on the blue tach, I just assume it is really 2400 on say a 450. I guess it could be 3600. You have to have a rough guess of what it is before you tach it.

Nobody is making one yet. But the technology has improved since the last attempt. There are 1000 Hz shutters out there now. Don't know about the commercial availability or cost. These are the shades that go completely black at the first sign of danger (one application).

http://www.liquidcrystaltechnologie...LCDShutters.htm

Apparently, an LC shutter tach should cost no more than a set of 3D glasses. 2400 rpm * 1 min/60 sec = 40 blinks/sec. So the high speed shutters should be adequate. You want the shutter to be completely clear for from 5~10 degrees of blade motion and black the rest of the time. At say 10 deg, 360/20 = 18 steps. So 18*40 = 720. 1000 Hz is on the edge. Maybe next year.

Since I fly alone a lot, the optical tach just didn't work for me. So I went to an EagleTree data logger for all the rpm info during flight. Of course it's only after the flight that you can review it, but the whole flight is recorded so you know whats going on during maneuvers.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

FWIW...all these "hand held tachs" are practically obsolete given telemetry these days.

Someone needs more friends to fly with

Yes, but my advantage is I just step out of my garage and fly, 20 acres, but a lot of tall pine trees so I hope I don't end up in the top of one.
