Does anyone have one of the older Avant e-Aurora frame sets in really good condition that they would like to sell? This is the frame set with the smaller battery bays and the vertically mounted ESC. I have most of the parts to build a second helicopter, but I would prefer to use the original e-Aurora frame set if I can possibly find one since it fits my TP 4400mAh batteries, Jive 120 ESC, and my Scorpion 4525-520 motor extremely well.

Please let me know what you have for sale.

I think Justin likes the old frames better because the TP 4400 mah batteries fits perfect in the batterie slots better then the new frames. And if you run jive there is better space to place the esc on Old ones the the new frames.I think that's why..?

I hope i have understand you right Justin?

Daniel.

As you can see from my photographs, the equipment I have right now fits perfectly into the older frame sets. Fact is, I bought the ThunderPower 4400mAh batteries and the Jive 120HV ESC at the premium price specifically because it would fit so perfectly into the original frame set.

The new frames are designed to fit the Castle Creations 120HV ESC and 5100mAh lipos. After the e-Aurora was released, many people complained about having to fork over $250 a battery for the ThunderPower 4400mAh lipos, and Avant responded by creating a new set of frames which would fit the cheaper Hyperion, Voltz, and Turnigy batteries perfectly.

Having tiny batteries in a large frame presents a problem since it is hard to get the CG precisely the same from flight to flight. The better thing to do is to buy the right size batteries for the helicopter you are flying. The older frame sets allows the 4400mAh lipos to be shifted against the rear of the battery slots so that the CG stays identical from flight to flight. With a system like the V-bar, keeping the CG precisely the same from flight to flight allows the autotrim program to give consistent piros behavior from flight to flight. If your CG varies from flight to flight, so does the flying characteristics.

By looking for a older e-Aurora frame set, I am trying to avoid having to buy new lipos. With the newer frames, if I wanted to use the 4400mAh lipos I would have to glue in carbon fiber blocks into the battery bays to act as "stops" so that I could position the battery precisely from flight to flight.

Avant can no longer produce the older frame sets, which I why I am forced to look for a used frame set (or else buy new batteries and change frames).

My current setup is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT and I couldn't be happier.

Things change, but I want to avoid this particular change just a little longer.

Lets look at it this way:

A Kontronik Jive 120HV is $540
Castle Creations 120HV is $220

A single ThunderPower 4400mAh 6s lipo is $250
A single Voltz 5100mAh 6s lipo is $114

The cost savings by using a single set of Voltz batteries and a Castle Creations ESC is nearly $600 compared to a single set of ThunderPower batteries and a Kontronik ESC. If you buy more lipos, the cost savings is even greater. With 6 batteries (enough for 3 flights), you can save more than $1000 and have essentially the same performance by going with the less expensive Castle Creations ESC and the Voltz lipos as compared to the more expensive Kontronik Jive ESC and the ThunderPower lipos.

AvantRC wants to make their helicopter affordable to everyone, and if they make the frames so that they only fit the most expensive batteries and only fit the most expensive ESC, then they automatically put the helicopter out of the price range of many people. I completely understand their reasoning

if you have new frames I would trade you. I know it would be a pain to tear down my eaurora but I would like to be able to run different batteries and don't mind changing.

Thanks for your offer. I do not have a new frame set on hand. I will have to get back to you on that one. But I do appreciate the offer.

I think I am just going to put the e-Aurora on the shelf for awhile. With medical school applications taking up all my time, and trying to finish up yet another semester of school, I just don't feel like playing with it anymore. I spent a good 2 weeks trying to figure out the very "best" configuration for all of the wires and components on my current Aurora. I even had a heat sink specially made to fit the speed controller. It was my hopes that I could continue to fly this "system" for a very long time swapping out one frame half at a time if needed. One of the good things about having 2 helicopters is that if you smash one, you can always look at the other helicopter to remember exactly how you routed the wires. A better thing about the Aurora is that all of the wires and components mount to one frame or the other, so it is possible to remove one frame leaving everything else in place.

I know that a lot of people just slap their servos on and go fly, but I like to make my helicopters absolutely perfect so that I don't make mistakes when I am out at the field. Things like chaffed wires causing a shorted servo, plugging lipos in backwards destroying an ESC, a blocked satellite antenna causing a loss of an RF signal, servo plugs coming loose from the receiver, and other expensive mishaps can be completely avoided with a careful build including routing wires in a way that they will not come loose or get pinched. My motto is "a place for everything and everything in its place". I hope the pictures of my build highlight this philosophy.

It takes a lot of time to figure out the absolute best configuration for everything, and I just don't have the motivation to do that again right now. So I think I will put the helicopter on the shelf for awhile until I am feeling more motivated. Maybe next month. Thanks for all your help.
