Most of the better helicopter engine are designed to run 30% nitro,The OS 91 HZ comes with extra head shims to adjust the compression and come initaly set up to run 15% so you have to add shims for 30%.

to raise an engine compression , wouldn't you want to decrease the volume instead ? (i.e. reduce shims)

Too raise it you decrease the volume or take shims out.You can also lower compressiom by raising the exhaust port.

Yes, lower the compression to run the higher nitro.

The reason you lower the compression with higher nitro is because more nitro makes more power and more power means more heat in the combustion chamber. IF the compression is too high, you will get pre-igntion and detonation.Yes you can run the motor too rich to keep the heat down but you will need a hotter plug to keep the motor running and not cooling the plug too much....

how would u gauge how much nitro increase that u will have to decreaase how much compression?

hope that made sense

At this point you can just ask. There is enough experience out there that you don't have to test the limits with your own engines. Otherwise, you'd have to test for detonation in engines. You will know when you have gone too far!

Buy an Enya #3, #4, #5, and OS #7, #8. Try all of them with your setup and you decide what is best. I used Enya #4's in OS 32's long ago on 30%. They idled better.

It has been my experience that when the OS #8 fails it is in flight causing a flame out and emergency auto. The Enya #3 on the other hand will fail but keep the engine running, The next time you to try to start the engine it will not start. Thus no flame out or emergency auto. I have never had a flame out in flight with an Enya #3 in the past 6 or so years of flying with them.

how could u tell that the engine is detonating? and will it still detonate if i can see lots of smoke ? and good temperature? seems like that is the only two indicators that i can use

Detonation will sound like a rattle when it gets loaded,it wont be as loud as bad bearings but it wil be noticable. Most of the better heli motors are set up for 30% nitro, you shouldnt have a problem uless you run it too lean (hot)....

Glow plug? What's that? What do you plug, and why do you want to make it glow?

Funny, but also a REAL question I once got from someone outside of the hobby.

I use the #8 in my OS50Hyper and YS91ST. Works well in both of them. The price you quoted is very good. My LHS, which used to be a great place but is in decline of late, wanted to charge me $8.99 each for the OS #8 last week. I decided to wait on Tower instead. Plus the kid behind the counter says that he'd never heard of Enya (I asked out of curiosity), and this shop caters to helis (at least it is a big part of their floor space).
