I'm sure that some of you are saying 12s all the way. But I still want to hear your opinion.
Here's my deal I have a 600e that I recently perched. I never have flown big electric before. So the 600e that I received came with a 8s motor and a 12s motor and what I'm up against is what batteries do I want to go with.
As far what I'm used to is my K3d .50 as far as power. So I guess what I'm asking is you guys to convince me to go one way or another.

thanks Jesse

8S is fine just be sure to get an ESC that is big enough to handle the amps. (120 - 160 amp)

12S allows you to charge faster (smaller packs) and is easier on your ESC and motor due to the lower amp draw. (ESC can be 80-100 amp)

8S = More amps, less voltage
12S = Less amps, more voltage

You are going to consume the same amount of watts either way.
(watts= amps x volts)

one of the main reasons for 12s besides the obvious power and low amp draw is batteries.

many guys own a 500 series heli.using 12S allows you to use the same batts when stepping up to a 600 size along with your current charger. This way you dont need a bunch of different size batts

WOW, 120 to 160 amp ESC? that's a lot more than I expected. My 600E (that I purchased used) came with a Hobbywing 70hv for 12s He said that it was great for the 12s setup. (would you agree?)Looks like I may just go with the 12S

Now that rises another question. 12s Parts? Looks like I'll need to get a pinion. and looking through the IPC (illustrated parts catalog) I don't have a a pinion support bearing for the 8 or 12s setup.Question when you guy's convert your 600E to a 12s do you do without the support bearing?

And by the way for 12s what size batteries( CG vs flight duration) are you using and C rating.

PS. fenderstrat, great name, my wife works for Fender here in Phoenix. Rock On!!!

cool, thanks.been playing STRATS for almost 30 years
What does your wife do for FENDER?that would be really cool, working for them

But,you will most likely get better answers for what you are doing in the ALIGN 600E forum,as you are doing a conversion. The compass 6HV was designed around 12S from the very beginning,so no mods are necessary such as a pinion support,as it comes stock. You will get better advice as to what works and actual set up lists and pics over there.

But if you have any other questions feel free to ask

Oh and for what its worth, the 6HV comes stock with a 70A ESC that is working quite well.As mentioned, one of the main benefits of 12S is much less amp draw, which requires a lower Amp ESC.12S really has many many benefits and not really any drawbacks.Weight of the batts is really the only concern but if the heli is designed to account for this it is not a factor

You bought cb frazers Knight 600e. Great set-up on 12s the same set-up he used came from his 6hv. Having flown his heli on 12s and mine was 8s for a while and now on 12s with some other mods. 12s is the way to go on it. The heli is lighter think mine is right around 7 lbs ish and its fbl too.

Ya, I bought CB's knight. When I received it, like any new heli I was inspecting it and found that the Compass 12s motor was shot. Well CB made it right and sent me a test Viper 550kv motor to replace it with. I would like to know what he used to secure that pinion on with. LOL I destroyed it trying to remove it and it's still on the old motor..
So now my only problem now is that this new Viper motor has a 6 point screw mount and the 600e is a 4 point so I'll only be able to use 2 screws to mount the motor. Will that be enough?

Most likely red loctite. I am testing motors for viper-rc also. I am only using the two bolts on mine just fine, Make sure you loctite them place.

I was wondering what you meant when you told me to check out the Trex/brand X forum for better answers.. LOL.. Its all good

Hey Bubba Gump, So tell me what do you think of the viper motor? Are you running the 550kv? Also I've noticed that the shaft seems to be shorter than the Compass motor so are you using the pinion bearing block? What kind of flight time with what size batteries to be expected? and do you have any pic's?

I'm chalked full of questions, been flying nitro forever and just finally shoved my Knight 3D into the ground hard and decided to switch to Electric.I've had many different helli's And always seem to come back to the Compass Kits they really fly great!

Love the viper motor. the 550kv one is the one Im running and works great. Short shaft is no problem since its 6mm shaft. No upper bearing support and working great.

Ok, got another?
Batteries, Does any one know what the constant current draw (or peak draw) is with the 12S setup? I'm just wondering if I could use 3000mah @ 20c

Depends on the type of flying your doing. If your just hovering around your fine with those. If your flying like i am and are doing hard 3d then i would run 30c or higher packs. I am running 2 6s 2650 35c packs for 3 and half mins. iam gonna run 2 6s 3300 35c or 45c packs and I think thats the combo for it. I have tried some 3700s and i could really feel the weight of them. Hope this helps.
