So this app has a setting for gas / nitro, but you have to enter the gearing info. I have a Century NX50 and know the final output ratio, but this app is asking for a gear tooth count.

I could just count the gear teeth, but the NX50 uses a counter gear so the numbers wont match up with the app. Its looking for main gear # of teeth and pinion # of teeth.

anybody got any ideas on what to put or did I just waste $4?

I imagine that you could just trick the app and put in a main gear and pinion tooth combination that will result in the same ratio you are looking for

Not a waste of $4, just do what RChelijim recommended.

Just plug in two numbers that'll give you your final gear ratio. That app is accurate +/- 100 I've found.

I've been playing around with it, but haven't really had much success. My blade 400 head speed is around 2500 rpms, but the app keeps telling me its about 3600-3700.

The name of the app is HeliTac, the thing to remember is that his is an auditory tac not a visual one. so you need to use this in low wind conditions or it will have discrepancies.

I have this on my phone and have used it numerous times and it is usually within 40 - 40 rpm of a more expensive tac. Took a reading last week of a TRex 500, in normal he was at 2600 the HeliTac caught him at 2601, in ST1 he was at 2700 and the app caught him at 2695 and 2697.

Not bad for 3 bucks.

Tried this out yesterday, was within +- 50 rpm of what was set up in gov. Awesome little app for couple bucks. Works great.

Interesting, I guess I need to try it out a bit more. In defense of the app. I did test the speed by hovering just above the iphone. Perhaps the rotor wash was interfering with the mics ability to record.

Helitach
I purchased the app and I wish I had not. For nitro, you to put the phone on the ground and hover over the phone according to the description on the App store, my bad for not reading all the comments before buying it. So, mistakes cost money as always.

+1 ducati we were out trying to use it and was giving bogus readings. Will it work with the wind blowing?

This is true...

I wonder if it could be secured to the skids and then go for a normal flight?

I imagine it would give readings from throughout the flight.

Nitro
When you think you have to hover the phone and all oil from the nitro is blowing all around, you really twice about it. Maybe if you secure the phone on the heli that might work. I am not ready to do that . I rather loss the $4. I am running a Multigove so I don't really needed but I thout it would a good app to have at the field to help people out, not the case.

Tried it last weekend in a 10kt wind. Ran two test. It appears to work well. I'll have to run it in a test against my optical tach to tell for sure.

Credit card can't be max'ed I have more up grades to buy!

disregard the bogus readings?
When using the this app with nitro, is it expected to get a few bogus readings? I tried this out for the first time, and in the history, most of the readings were either heli not detected, or in the 1750 range. I had a couple though that were over 3000, or well below 1750 which we know is not correct when the heli is just hovering. Would it be common sense to just disregard the bogus readings, and go with the average reading? Unfortunately, I don't have a regular tach to compare to. Also, any opinions on how the readings would be affected if phone is in a ziplock baggie?
