The major cause...
of traffic jams is just straight up more drivers. Ones that are younger, older, talking on cell phones, texting, dealing with children, tired, wired, whatever, doing anything else but what they should be doing. With more drivers on the roads certain intersections and on/off ramps just get plugged up. An attentive driver will be watching whats happening 4 to 5 lengths ahead and will adjust for this accordingly. This doesn't happen when the driver is distracted. I generally drive the car 5 to 6 lengths ahead in heavy traffic, if I see brake lights then I can adjust safely.
One more thing, I have been the guy cleaning up the remains of accidents on the highways. You only add more work to an already stressful and sometimes very emotional situation, when you slow down and stop traffic to gawk. It's highly unlikely that it's anybody you know, so slow down enough to be safe, but please keep moving in a timely manner, you never know if all the EMS is already on the scene or more is arriving, and those couple of seconds could mean life or death for someone.

self appointed tailgating jerks
In states that I've lived in California and Nevada, on a multi lane highway, you can pass on left or right. Left lane passing is only for two lane highways.

There is no 'Fast lane', the speed limit is still the speed limit regardless of what lane you are on. I find people who think that there is a 'fast lane' and that even if you are doing the speed limit in the left lane that they have a right to get on your a$$ are the real jerks.

As much as I hate to admit it the speed limit is just that, if your doing it your not blocking traffic no matter what lane your in unless its an emergency vehicle. Where did this unwritten rule come from that you can't be in the left lane unless your hauling some serious ass? Your dammed if you do and dammed if you don't speed, either way you loose.

All I want is during moderate traffic is to be able to pick a speed and do it, all this speeding up and slowing down for NO reason is what really pisses me off. I can't do that in the right lane because nobody can merge anymore so I go over to the left lane and within two seconds one of those asshole left lane self proclaimed policemen is on my ass trying to bump me out even though I'm doing ten to fifteen over the limit.

Its to the point where it temps me to purposely park in the left lane doing the speed limit but I won't do that because I DON'T HAVE AN AGENDA like most do on the roads.

Get in line, set your distance and cruise. You might actually start enjoying your drive. Whether your doing 55 to 70 makes almost no difference in drive time on most trips.

BTW, the biggest causes of traffic jams is people who can't merge into traffic without causing everyone to slow down, speed up to the speed of traffic, pick your spot, and move in WITHOUT disrupting traffic. The other is accidents caused from rearending due to inattentive drivers/cell phones.

IMO: Anyone is welcome to occupy the left lane while doing the speed limit for the purpose of passing a slower vehicle. If you are in the left lane pacing a vehicle in the right lane, and both cars are doing the speed limit, you are impeding traffic flow, creating road rage, etc. MTF over and get over yourself. Passing a car does not require 5 miles either. If you feel justified passing a car in the left lane at a speed of only about 1/4 of a mile per hour faster than the car you are passing, and collecting a train of another dozen cars that would prefer to be going about 9mph faster in the process, you are a poor driver. If I'm in the left lane doing 9mph over while passing someone doing 4mph over, and some maniac comes along at 25mph over, I accelerate briefly and move the hell out of his way welcoming his passing. I love nothing more than the few that actually want to go faster than I do, and I want them right out there in front of me ASAP.

I agree but find that most people just want the lane all to themselves, has nothing to do with passing. They think ownership of the lane means passing at the rate of .000001 mph faster then the guy their passing. Technically their right and are passing but the reality is they just want the lane to themselves. Or they fly by then slow down to the speed I was originally doing, they just want to be in front.

Slow Car in the Fast Lane
I'd say the driver's inattentiveness was the issue here... When a cop tailgates you with his lights off, it means "get the heck out of my way"... Who doesn't know that?

I really hate people driving in the left lane that are doing the speed limit thinking they are just fine.

YOU ARE IMPEDING TRAFFIC, GET THE HE11 OUT OF THE WAY.

I thought it was law in all states that the left lane was for passing.

Try doing that in Germany and you will get a ticket.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

No, the translation is -
'The road hog belongs in the right lane with all the old ladies, not putting along in the left lane. THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING. Someone should go back to Drivers Ed to learn how to drive.'

Wood, so your saying its legal to speed in the left lane because its there for passing and when making a pass its legal to speed?

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you and am not a lane hog but by your logic you can go as fast as you want in the left lane because there is always someone that wants to go faster.

Around here the speed limit is 65.
You can get run over if you drive 65.
Many do 70 -75 and many 80.
If I'm doing 75 in the left lane and traffic behind me is piling up I move to the right.

It is not legal to speed.
But rude to slow down the traffic flow.
I do what I would hope others would do for me, move over and get out of the way. It is safer for them to pass on my left than on my right.
If they want to get a ticket for going 10 - 15 over the limit I don't try to slow them down.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

In California and Nevada, the left lane is passing only on a two lane highway. On a multi-lane freeway, passing on the left or right is legal. Someone needs to go back to drivers ed for sure
