Starting to think I do not need a header tank. One more piece to go wrong. I am running a Hyper 50 with a Hatori pipe, 30% N, on a Trex 600. Regular cluck, no bubble clunk or fuel magnet.

What are the pros and cons to the header tank?

Benefits - Reserve capacity and no air in fuel lines.
If you always land before main tank is empty and use a bubbleless clunk or fuel magnet, then you don't need a header tank.

I like to run one as an insurance policy for the times I can't land as soon as the timer goes off due to other activity over the runway.

The pros are obvious....a bit higher fuel capicity and like Fastflyer said, reduces the chance of your carb ingesting air bubbles from the fuel line. Also, when you have a well setup fuel system, the header tank will always stay full so, you don't get the foam and bubbles going to the carb from the fuel sloshing around in the main tank during 3D. That's the ultimate goal of installing a header tank.

Another benifit that I've experinced is when the main tank pick up line breaks in flight. Many times I wouldn't notice a problem until I see that my header tank starting to empty but the main tank is still full. That's the first sign that it's time to change out the main tank pickup line or clunk. Had I not had a header tank installed, I would have had to do an emergency auto but, if I was too low and in the middle of a inverted manuaver, it could have ended with a nasty crash. I think having a header has saved me from a hairy landing at least 4 or 5 times now.

The only cons I can think of is the fact that you do have a little more to do during the initial build and you have to run a little bit more fuel line and it can cause problems if its not correctly done, but that's a very rare occurance. I've always run header tanks on all my nitro helis and they've never given me any performance problems at all.

I was thinking that exactly, it has saved me twice so far. Its an often overlooked benefit.

There's not all that much that can go wrong with it either, once you plumb it correctly all you have to do is have to change the clunk line once in a while
