fwiw...

I fly with a buddy who just completed a new 700E deluxe FBL kit...He does everything right, excellent construction, is a ME student...In short, knows what he's doing...

We watched him set up the heli, spool it up, make a short (under two min.)flight....Went back to his truck, recharged the 12S pack, then went back for the second flight...Less than two min. in, he landed to check on the heli...No sooner did he hit hold and the magic black smoke came out of the canopy...We got the canopy off, and the Ice 120 ESC was melted...I've heard of this happening, but this was scary...Heli set up correctly, no hard flying, less than 10 minutes connected...Ouch.
Only good was that the heli was on the ground when it fried.

Anyone out there have similar experiences?

John.

Was it under the canopy to where it wouldn't get 5 mph of air on it for cooling?

Edit: 5 mph needed, not 10.

fwiw..

Was under the canopy....No huge loads during the flight...Most of which was backwards..
Can't imagine cooling was an issue due to the flight profile...I would hope Castle has incorporated thermal shutdown anyway...Going up in smoke is a bit harsh....

Helicraze...Were the units you mentioned also Ice 120...?

On the + side, my CC120HV has 70 flights now with zero issues (it's at the back, under the rotor fan, as specified by Align/CC).

However, if they'd made a super combo with a JIVE, I would have taken that: 1) for Kontronik reliability, 2) for the integrated BEC (with the CC I needed an external Hercules BEC).

Hmm thought CC had this sorted with the new ESC's?

If this keeps happening you there aint going to be no CC for much longer!

60% of the time, it works every time!

I'm curious to see what, if anything, Castle does to rectify what seems to be a serious issue..Any Mfg. can, and does, have units that fail..But this seems too widespread to be a statistical fluke.....

It seems most of the problems are the esc that came with the kits -- not bought individualy. Production run errors hu -- un-nerveing to say the least

My experience...
I have some experience with the Castle Phoenix ICE HV line of controllers. First I had an ICE HV 160. About 10 flights on my Trex 700E, during spool-up it failed. It just wouldn’t work anymore. Castle did warranty it no problem. I then went with a Phoenix ICE HV80. I ran that about 15 flights then on spool-up one time it caught on fire! Castle warrantied that one too. I then went with another Phoenix ICE HV 80 that was sent to me from Castle as a replacement and it has performed flawlessly going on 50+ flights now. Castle did mention a change they made to secure the capacitors better. It made a huge difference. I use the 700e for aerial photography so it does not see any large current draws. I’m just glad the failures occurred on the ground. I would buy another one. I don’t have any experience with the 120.

The CC 80A ICE HV can handle excess of 100A easily.

Where they tent to fail is when the user runs under 70% of throttle for any excess of time, the ESC has to work very hard to regulate the voltage, overheating in the long run.

You can see the temp going up the 1st 5 minutes where I am only hovering (70% esc), and it actually cools off when I put the hammer down for aerobatics (94% esc)

The defective ones, (see Castle Creations Bulletins) with bad internal contacts (gap) heatsinks, or with loose/unglued heatsinks shells will just go off in the ways descibed.

The the 80 and 120 just recently got a new outer case that holds the heatsink together, and protects the capasitors much better.

I had good luck with my 80 ICE HV.
