Does anyone fly near cell phone towers or anything else such as microwave towers? There is a nice empty field where I live at but the cell phone tower makes me think twice. I have searched and read some other threads stating that if they run pager frequencies then that may be a problem. Just looking to see if anyone has anything to say about it.

Thanks.

There's a tower about 75 yards from my back door. I've flown in my back yard countless times with no issues with FASST.

....but don't wholesale assume you will not have a problem. Work your way up in model size and range from model. If you have a park flyer maybe give that a shot, do some range checks and see if your range is diminished relative to where you normally fly. If all is well, have fun and report back because I bet there is not a lot of first hand info about the effects of the towers and us flying on 2.4

Hi Tommy,

Be careful like was stated already. Many times you can get what referred to as "De-sense" in a receiver even if it's on an entirely different frequency. In essence, it comes down to an overload condition in your receiver and the weaker (your signal) can't be heard.

By the way, this can happen no matter WHO's equipment you are using. Weak signals don't stand a chance against high powered transmitters.

Also, don't assume that the tower is transmitting a signal all the time. It may or may not so make sure you do lots of tests at different times of the day.

Basic radio theory.... I'm a Ham Radio operator (another money pit) and I have run into this many times...

If it ain't broke, go fly some more!

best way to check it out is with a cheap foamy... fly it up around the tower and see what happens.

I have flown my FASST stuff at a flying site with huge high voltage transmission towers about 150 yards behind the flight line. No issues. I have also flown at several locations with cell towers fairly close with no issues. Plus I have never seen any reports of people having issues related to cell towers or power lines. But it is still good practice to keep as much blue sky as possible between your plane and the tower!!

Yeah, I know I'm not going to go out of my way to challenge a cell tower with my 10C. I'm pretty sure my Futaba 10C's output will not be a good match for the tower should it choose that moment to wake up and smite me with a couple thousand watts!

Anyone know how many watts a cell tower is really pumping? I bet it's not really that much but I'm sure it's way more than enough to potentially swamp an r/c receiver.

Go to http://www.antennasearch.com and you can put in your address and it will tell what towers are there. It also lists the frequency and power output on some of them. I do know that a lot of them put out around 900mhz. At a field I fly at there is a cell tower nearby and 910mhz video frequency used for FPV is pretty much unusable there. 2.4 has never had a problem though.

Also, watch out for towers wearing disguises.

I like the disguise efforts. The landcsape already looks ridiculous. Any little bit helps. Jeesh, I was out flying (full scale) near dusk a couple weeks back and it was crazy. White strobes were flashing at me from all directions. Before cell towers were big in this area we had maybe a half dozen strobes within a 10 mile radius to the airport. Now they are every couple of miles in every direction as far as one can see even in the wooded, less populated areas.

Those are both nice efforts. I hope they continue that. Those things stand out like environmental sores around here and look aweful from the ground and the air! I like how they made the "palm" look like the others.

Marty,

To answer your question, the systems I used to work on were approximately 20 watts peak at the output of the transmitters. The antennas have a gain of about 6dB so with the loss of the feed line and duplexer, that makes the radiated power in the vicinity of about 75 watts erp (effective radiated power).

These operated at 1.8 Ghz, and were digital systems. Keep in mind that there are multiple transmitters in every cell site, usually around 6 is the magic number.

When you have multiple transmitters operating in the same area like a cell site, you start to get what's referred to as intermodulation products. This is where you get mixing products of all the frequencies in use. Bottom line is they are noisy as hell when you get close to them. No match for the .5 watt coming out of your transmitter. BTW, good radio, that's what I use...

Hope this answers your question...

Very helpful info. 20 watts. I was actually guessing around 50. Regardless, as we both agree, The tower could blast past our super duper 1/2 watt if it felt like it. It is good to read from others that we seem to exist in close proximity to the towers.

Thanks for the input everyone.

This is the one I am talking about. I was told it is a cell phone tower.

Unless you plan on flying circles around it at flag height I would not worry about it.

Best disguise yet if that is a cell tower.
