My mate has an issue

He has a 120HV Kontroniks with a Scorpion 5020-450.

Trouble is as soon as he does a pitch pump or something with a little bit of pressure on the motor the ESC shuts down. I did read something about the soldering on the motor connectors and this is not the issue. Could it have something to do with the timing?

As far as I'm aware he just runs mode 4 in the ESC also

Here are the specs on the ESC & Motor. For those that may need it to help diagnose the issue.

What lipo is he using? Maybe it's not enough Sells, or what ever.
What pinion also is he running? As well as other on board electronics.
Sound like the Lipo is not up to the challenge.

120HV Kontroniks Specs:
- Cell count: 5-12 Lipos
- Operating voltage: 16-50V
- Continuous Current: 120A
- Max Current: without external cooling - 120A. With external cooling device such as a heatsink, the continuous discharge current can be greatly increased.
- Max RPM with 2-pole-motor: ...to be defined...
- Size: 62x32x21mm
- Weight with cables: 108g
- Cable cross-section: 4/6mm²
- BEC current continuous: 5A
- BEC current max.: 15A
- BEC voltage: 5.5V

Features:
- BEC adjustable with ProgCARD: 5-6V
- BEC short circuit protection
- Auto Programming Mode
- Stick positions programmable
- Mode programming
- ProgCARD ability
- RPM Control
- EMK brake can be disabled

+1

he can be hitting the lv cutoff,

have him change the lvc to decrease power not shut off the controller completly.

that is a heavy machine and will pull a lot of current,
he needs at least a 45c pack.

your mate first and foremost MUST observe the LED flashes, then refer to the back of the manual where it clearly states what the flashes mean. THEN if it is not understood and such please yourself or him then with that information post again so it can properly be determined what is either wrong or what can be done. Far more information is needed here.

Hi, he is using FlightPower 50c-100c packs.

Plenty good enough, no problems there. 8 flashes on the ESC LED

That means

"LED is blinking eight times
 Over current detected by hardware,
immediate shut down, no restart
possible. Extreme overload, check
motor and gearbox for mechanical
damage.'''"

Get an Eagle Tree into the system and log the flight. You've got to know what the average and peak currents are to even begin to look for the problem.

Take the motor off and make sure your wires aren't chaffed touching the metal motor mount, this is one reason that caused the over current and to tight of mesh and misalignment can cause over current.
