Has anyone seen the Trex 550 carbon fiber boom? Rumor has it its an aluminum boom covered with some sort of fake carbon. Is this true? Do they make a real carbon fiber boom (like the Trex 450 boom)?

yes it is aluminum with carbon.

they do not yet make a full carbon 550 boom.

they do for the 600.

The Align CF booms on the 500 and up are aluminum with a CF covering/wrap for the CF look. CF alone would never hold up on the big helis. If you are dead set on having a carbon fiber boom for whatever reason you can purchase the CF tubing and cut you own.

Thats strange the 500 pure carbon boom that I have(not Align) has held up and the 600 pure carbon boom (Align)(not Align) has held up. So where do you get your info?

If you want a true carbon for the 550 get a 600 and cut it down. Both Align and EDN have carbon for 500's and 600's. I have not bought a 550 yet so I will find out when I buy one.

I remember in the past someone told me the carbon booms vibrate more but I have not expirenced that.

incorrect.

most of your 'big' helis fly carbon booms just fine and have for years.

have had several.

align was first with the carbon wrapped aluminum boom gimmick. had one on my 550 recently. cheesy.

Yup, I had a 600E when the 600N was still a figment of JK imagination, and the first CF tail booms were 100% CF and they were Tuff as hell! Then, later, the 500 CF boom came out, and it was 100% CF and quite durable too! But somewhere along the way they made a switch to AL wrapped in CF and they are no better than the AL only booms? This was about the time the 600NSP came out?

All of my helicopters including the 30cc gasser have all carbon boom. They hold up just fine. Align is probably doing the aluminum with fake CF covering to save money.

So the Trex 600 boom is the same diameter as the Trex 550 boom? And they make a genuine carbon fiber Trex 600 boom? Do you have a part number on it?

Look at Helidirect>upgrades>Align>T600>EDN 1051 http://www.helidirect.com/align-tre..._30_295_298.hdx
Same as Align but it doesn't say Align and is half price.

In the T600 both are pure carbon

I don't think it is fake CF, just a thin layer of CF?

Be very careful.
I have seen aluminum booms with a thin coat of plastic that looks like CF sold as genuine CF booms.

All the Align booms I have had for the 500 and up have been wrapped in CF. I guess I should have stated what I knew and not made that statement

So then the only way to get a carbon fiber boom that is genuine carbon fiber through-and-through for a 500 or larger Trex is to buy an aftermarket boom such as the EDN boom Jerry suggested?

buy a longer boom and cut it down. All of my MA birds back in the day had CF booms and that's how I got them onto my smaller XCels before they were making them for the .46.
Once they made CF booms, I never had an aluminum boom on my big birds. Never had a problem.
