try a simple exercise in calculating it for yourself.

you will need the following websites:
https://wwwapps.ups.com/ctc/ - to quote the shipping cost
http://www.uline.com/product/BrowseWebClass.htm - to estimate the cost of a box/packing materials and to find box sizes.

Now, if you think you are being (or have been) ripped off on shipping do the following:

1: measure the item, then go to Uline and find the box size it fits best in, with minimum 2 inches all around to allow for packing material
2: figure out what it weighs packed in the box with sufficient padding to survive the trip.
3a: go to UPS select "detailed time and cost"
3b: enter the postal code for where it's coming from and where it's going to
3c: select "my packaging" from the drop-down and enter the weight and dimensions you calculated for the item packed to ship.
3d: select "pre-paid online" and "will drop off at UPS store" and hit continue

Now, take the price that gave you, add to it the price for the box you used, and about another $1 for packing materials. Then take the time you just spent doing all this, add another 5 minutes to account for actually wrapping and packing the item, and calculate what that costs at $10-$15 hour pay rate. add that in as well.

Doing this, i have just run a couple sample quotes from some of the majour online stores in our hobby. Without exception, they all asked less for shipping/handling than what i calculated UPS would charge me to ship it. If you add in the other costs, they charged an average of $5-$8 less than what i calculated the actual total cost to be to ship it.

Now, they probably get a better UPS discount than i do, but i know it 'aint enough to make up $8 on smaller packages.

So keep this in mind next time you want to complain and moan about the amount XYZ store charges to ship your item: At most, they are breaking even on shipping/handling with what they charged you to cover it. If you want to complain, go complain to UPS/USPS/FedEx, they get %90 of the money that goes to shipping charges, they control the rates.

Keep in mind that corporate accounts get discounts on shipping rates, and also buy boxes and such in quantity, so look at the 100pc prices, not singles to be more accurate.

Yet another thread that could spin out of this is why have shipping companies not given back the rate increases from when fuel was stupid expensive? They used that as a reason to jack prices up, but when fuel prices came back down, not a peep . . . and on *THAT*, I feel violated!

Now take this and extrapolate shipping to overseas locations even across the border to Canada and Mexico.

Shipping to Canada!! Oh, My! I've fought that battle more than I care to admit.

Enjoy things that money can buy IF you don't lose the things money can't buy.

the comparison quotes i ran were done using the account we have for the eBay business i work for, shipping 15-20 packages a day. I'm sure someone like Heliproz gets a steeper discount than we do, but not hugely.

Not here . . . it's still a buck below where it was when it last peaked. Up a wee bit, yes, but nowhere near where it was . .

I don't care about shipping prices(not too much)BUT!!
But whatever you do, don't sit on the thing for 3 days. I read one seller, ask, if I start charging $4 for orders $100 or more, would you abandon me? Well of course not, but take a week to get me my order when you're one state over from me, you can betcha I'm gonna abandon you whether you charge me nothing for an order over $100. Man when my heli goes in, I want my crash parts like yesterday. Get fast shipping and most will stay with you forever unless your prices are wayyy over the others. I remember my friends saying man you really out to support the hobby shop in CC and I say ok. I would rather help someone that others say to help out. I think man this is probably ok, then I see it takes a week to get my order from 1 state over. I think hmmm, I can get my stuff from California in 3 days to 8 states over for $3.99 and from the other in a week that's one state over, guess what? If you think I'm gonna pay higher parts prices, $6.99 shipping and wait a week, good bye!!! Ship the same day and I'll stay with you forever, any one listening??
