I have a good number of friends that are police officers in all the different agencies and what people do not understand is that most of them are not great shots with a pistol.
Not saying all cops are crack shots. But, I do believe they are required to go to the firing range from time to time.

I just wish they could keep the fat ones out of the doughnut shops.

good old hollywood. Barrel rolling across the floor w/ 2 .45's blazing, knocking down bad guys with head shots at 50 yards or more. Almost as good as (and I saw this last night), bad guys with .308 assault rifles from 20 yards SPRAYING a Geo w/ 50 rounds and they don't penetrate the 1 mm aluminum door skins.
Your average Joe couldn't hit a paper plate in offhand position from 10 yards but maybe 1 or 2 times out of 10.
That's what gets me about this shooter. He had a 20 round clip right???
Yet somehow he killed 6 and wounded 12. Sounds to me like he's been spending some time at the range.

Yeah, we are going to be hearing more about this matter as time goes on.

They (Fox) are already taking a very hard look at that sheriff in the Tucson area down there that had several reports on that shooter and did next to nothing.

You know, the same sheriff thats blaming the tea party.

I am also glad to see that people on here don't believe everything on TV about how people get shot. Movies and TV make people into idiots believing everything they see. People are always shocked when I tell them that cars do not explode when you shoot their gas tank with a gun, or when the car goes off a cliff. All movies people!

I was told the only time they go to the range is when they get ready to re-up their carrying permit. Other than that there is no requirement, but that is here in California not sure of other areas or jurisdictions. If I was an officer I would be going all the time, but then again I like to shoot and they get there ammo free.

we used to have a sweet range owned by the city and used for the police and the SWAT, but was open to the public except for a few days per month (you could even buy ammo at the range!!). Then people started complaining about the noise when they built there 20 years later (kinda like the airports) and that was that for our city range. The only range now is in another town, indoors, or 30 miles away at a game preserve run by the state. This one was nice with berms out to 200 yards right in town!!!

At might department we qualify 2 times a year and do one inservice training a year, so we are shooting 3 times in a year, but the inservice is a day long for firearms, a day long for driving, a day long for defensive tactics, and so on.

Really? You only shoot 3 times a year?

Yeah, I'll keep my gun on my hip, thank you very much.

Yep, but I personally just like most of the officers that work there, go shoot more. I usually shoot about 3 times a month when I have time, so I am shooting all throughout the year.

Since you are the thread starter and you got this started with a story about the Indian guy getting killed by the cop, why don't you provide some links to that story?

It has to be out there somewhere.

I googled it and could find nothing on it.

Is this all BS just to dump on cops?

BENTDABOOM, why are you such a cop hater. Did you get a ticket recently or go off your meds ?
Cops are people also, and there are a few cop screwballs, but the majority I have known are very level headed and well trained.
If somebreaks into my house and is trying to attack me with a knife (even a 4 inch) I will shoot to kill. Trying to wound someone in a fast moving situation is ridiculous, and even if your lucky enough to wound and survive the attacker, he will likely try to sue you.

If u think a 4 inch knife is no big deal why don't you do us all a favor and stab your self in the chest or neck. Then we will have some proof that the cops did the right thing.
If some crazy guy threatens a police officer with a knife they are completly justified in a deadly force situation. Sorry but officer goes home...scum bag dies.

Some more facts are surfacing in the case of the Native American wood carver that was shot by a Seattle Police Officer. Apparently, rather than advancing on the officer, and refusing to drop the knife as the officer ordered, the victim was not advancing or even facing the officer. Also, he was apparently wearing headphones at the time and may not have been able to hear anything the officer said.

The Police Department is supposed to be releasing the results of their review soon. It will be interesting to see if they approach this head-on or just put the normal "spin" on it like the Police Guild President did with his comment "in general, an armed person who is standing sideways to an officer can still pose a threat."

The shooting was ruled NOT justified by a preliminary review board.

Here is part of the article. The topic starter should have included the link posted above in his first post. The "innocent upstanding citizen" clearly had issues and had prior police contact. He made prior threats to kill officers.
Four days later there was another encounter with police, when a business called complaining Williams was yelling and swearing at his customers. On August 25th, an angry Williams was stopped for jaywalking. The officers let him off with a warning. Here he had another of his wood carvings with him.

At 7:30 PM the next evening, police got a call claiming Williams was yelling at customers outside the Dick's drive-in on Capitol Hill. The following exchange between a female officer and Williams shows a side of the woodcarver we haven't heard before.

“They don't want you here, you're bothering people,” says the officer.

“F***k you b**ch. I’ll f***ing kill you, all you police force,” shouts Williams.

Once again, they let Williams go, and the officers discussed his unusual behavior in the car.

“Mike stopped him yesterday for walking in traffic and he was acting the same way. He was clenching his fists and they thought he was going to fight."

Williams eighth and final run in with the law last August would take place four days later, when officer Ian Birk pulled over because he says he saw Williams stabbing a knife into piece of wood

You mean "right side". If the full story was posted in the first post, not on page 3, I bet we would be having a different conversation. I would have to agree from what I have read the officer may be in trouble here.

Agreed, but it seems to happen all the time, a discussion going WAY overboard without all the facts...

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ht...hooting10m.html
The knife that John T. Williams was carrying when he was fatally shot by a Seattle police officer on Aug. 30 was folded in a closed position when it was recovered minutes after the shooting, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
The knife's condition, combined with evidence that Williams was shot in the side, played a role in a preliminary determination by the Police Department's Firearms Review Board and Chief John Diaz that the shooting was not justified, said one law-enforcement source.
http://www.komonews.com/news/local/108548839.html
"Remember the very first thing that we saw was the picture of the knife wide open that the police department put out," said Tim Ford, attorney for the Williams family. "And we know now that, as we've shown here, that the knife was closed."
