I see that lot of guys are still asking what is a proper backlash between those two...

I would say :
push it firmly against the main gear and then back it off just a tinny bit.I did this on all my helis,never had a problem.Too loose = no good,too tight = no good.No paper or any other tricks needed.
As you can see from a video,there is a little play between a main gear and a pinion.

I fold a slip of paper once. Slide it in the gear mesh. Push the two together as hard as I can. Bolt it tight. Never had a problem. Hope this helps! Happy new year.
