If you watch any UFC at all, you would know that any fighter that is strictly a boxer stands like 0 chance of any success. Bell rings, take down, ground and pound, submit, fights over.

I was once a big boxing fan, now I dont even watch it, UFC and MMA have taken over.

In two minds about MMA. I think concentrating on who could, like, totally open a can of whoopass on whom is a little juvenile and completely misses the point, IMHO. MMA is ugly. Appallingly butt-ugly. If I want to see musclebound guys squirming together on the floor and grunting, there are clubs for that - they're discreet and you can visit with confidence.

Sure, uh-huh, an MMA fighter could take down a boxer within seconds of that bell going ding. It won't be anywhere near as easy as MMA fans envisage and the MMA fighter will be picking a few teeth outta the wall for his trouble. But a boxer on the ground is like a beached whale.

But boxing is beautiful because of the rules. I could bring a handgun to an MMA fight and walk out world champion. So why not? If it's 'no rules action' (more or less), then why not a bolo? Maybe a length of chain? Boxers don't kick you in the kneecap for the same reason an MMA fighter won't bash you with a brick. Not in the rules, and the point of boxing was *never* punching the snot out of all comers irrespective of fighting style etc. We tried that and decided a few hundred years ago it was a lot more fun with some rules and a bit of structure. The 'I am the mightiest IN THE UNIVERSE BEHOLD MY FEARSOME KILLER FALCON PUNCH' is an MMA mindset and betrays a pretty simplistic outlook on what a martial art ought to be and what it should achieve.

I began boxing when I was 10 - sure I could have stayed fat and kept begging guidance counsellors to protect me somehow. It was easier to learn to fight. Sure, I went to karate and all that. Not my scene. To me, boxing is beneficial because you work within the rules to produce the best outcome. MMA has its place and I've nothing against anyone enjoying it. But it's hard not to notice many MMA fans have little to no idea about the martial art - boxing -they claim to have left behind in the dust like a punchy grandfather with dementia.

I doesnt sound like you have a good grasp on what the UFC is, or the rules involved. Many of the fighters are boxers, or at least started there, then added other aspects to their game.

Thats all I'll say on it, not going to argue, everybody is welcome to their opinion.

lol no arguments here - I think MMA is fine and I'm not shook up about how it may or may not impact boxing. I also think the fighters are excellent ad of course many are boxers - if you wantto learn to punch you learn to box and I'm pretty sure UFC fighters still use their fists.

No, my gripe is the attitude of some of the fans. I just think many people get far too hung up on the whole 'an MMA fighter would just take him down boxing sux lol' thing - it betrays a lack of understanding. You say perhaps I'm lacking in understanding of UFC, and maybe you're right. I never took a great deal of interest, TBH. I saw a few fights and decided I find groundwork a bit brutal and boring to watch. I was constantly thinking 'Wish those guys would get up and start fighting again'.

Andypants,
They have already had boxer vs mma fighter. There was an almost immediate takedown, ground and pound and then submission. No contest. Randy Couture won the fight easily. MMA does have rules and the fighters are penalized if they dont follow them. I used to be a boxing fan but I think they fail to follow the rules quite a bit. If I recall ear biting is not in the rules. Also the amount of hugging that goes on in boxing with no action until the ref steps in is ridiculous. At least in MMA there is no time where the fighters just decide to stop and hug because they are tired.
If you dont know much about grappling it may seem boring in the clinch or on the ground to watch MMA but if you are educated and know what is happening it is much more exciting.
Is there still good boxing. Sure Manny Pacquao is certainly great to watch.
For me they need to step it up in boxing to catch back up to MMA.
Just my opinion
Enjoy what you like to watch

Fair point about having a deeper knowledge about clinching etc. I can definitely see how it'd be less boring if I knew more about it. No less ugly though...

Here's where I step up and admit I haven't watched any professional boxing at all for a long time. I don't bother. We had a professional match last month here in Oz between Danny Green and some dogsbody - he went down after a glancing shot to the head about threee nanoseconds into the first round. I coulda gone to the pub and watched it with my buddies but I had an inkling I knew what the outcome would be. MMA gets people in and while I think the way UFC is presented emphasises and glorifies the violence in a way I don't think boxing does (or should), any martial art is fine by me cause that s***t changes lives.

Don King has a lot to answer for.

Andypants, you share my exact feelings on Boxing vs. MMA. Boxing is the sweet science. Watching a skilled boxer working like a surgeon to take apart his opponent is far more appealing to me than watching guys bludgeon each other the way MMA does. I watch MMA from time to time, but usually end up changing the channel.

I like reading the last post of a thread and the first post and then trying to figure out what could have possibly happened in-between.

I liked the UFC type stuff when it first started and there was a mixing of disciplines and mismatched opponents. Now everyone knows the game and learns the game and it does look how Andypants describes it.
