If this has been posted already I apologize...but I need to know WHAT EXACTLY is the main difference between the 500 and 550? What parts where upgraded and so-on.

To the guys who actually built both of these birds...please comment on this topic.

Thx
JB

The 500 is a helicopter with small 425mm blades.

The 550 is a light weight scaled down version of the 600 with a 600 power system. That gives it incredable performance. There are lots of parts that are common between the 550 and 600 (head, gears tail, motor, and other parts). The 500 and 550 have NO parts in common.

Ben kinda hit the nail on the head. I have built both. I fly my 500's more because of space limitations. I usually drive out to the field because the 550 is larger and more powerful.

The 500 is more cost efficient when it comes to the deals you can find and the price of batteries. The 550 takes 6S 4200-5000mah batteries which can run 75-100 bucks where as the 500 runs 6S 2400-3000mah batteries for less than half the price.

But, if you have experience, space, and are confident in your flying, I highly reommend the 550E 3G. I think it is the best heli offered from Align. The power to weight ratio is sick. One thing I am not a fan of are servo levers that you find on the larger helis like the 600 and 700. The 550 is still a good size, but has direct throw from the servo arm to a single rod instead of 2.

The 550 and 500 share the same FB paddles and rubber canopy spacers. I may be missing something... Oh yeah, the tail rotor control arm is the same also.

They are different helis with little in common as far as parts go. Maybe bearings, paddles, a few odds and ends, but totally different.

There is about as much in common between the 500 and 550 as there is in common between the 250 and 500.

I've had the 550e 3G since they first became available in the states. It's an impressive heli. Being the equivalent of a 30-sized Nitro heli and having flown a bunch of 30-sized nitro helis over the years, the incredible power to weight ratio of the 550e and resulting performance increase was phenomenal -- and surprising. It may be a "30" sized kit, but outperforms them in all respects.

I bought the combo which included essentially everything but a battery, receiver, and charger -- and built it bone stock. The only down side is that at flight number 12, the Align ESC went up in a puff of smoke as I was spooling up to take off. Fortunately, the ESC only smoked, it didn't catch fire, and didn't take out my LiPo or any of the other on-board electronics. I replaced that stock ESC with a Castle ICE 100 and the heli just rocks.

It doesn't lack for power out of the box and the FBL feel is crisp and responsive.

Buy it, build it, perhaps keep an eye on your ESC or replace it before flying, but enjoy it.

I'm flying Turnigy 4500 mah 6S 30C LiPos and get at least 5:30 minutes of flight time while putting back about 80% of the original charge.

Nice heli. I'm not sure where you can buy one without electronics, unless maybe Grand RC or another shop would be willing to strip out the goodies, however.

I have owned 3 Trex 500s in the past and now own a Trex 550E and love the 550E way more than a 500. The 550E has better power to weight ratio and is much bigger in the air. The 500 isn't a bad heli by any means, but you will find the 550E more impressive and more fun to fly. Autos with the 550E are great compared to the 500 and the 550 shares more parts with the 600 than anything else. The 550 is a slightly smaller 600 running 520mm to 550mm blades. The power is incredible and its just a great looking heli.

Don't settle for the 500 if you have the money for the 550.

When u don't feel like soaring through the air with a plane, beat it into submission w/ a heli!

3G is the name that Align has chosen for their 3-axis flybarless controller system.

If you get the 3G version, you're buying a flybarless kit with a three axis gyro. Pretty cool system.

Currently the system consists of two parts -- the sensor amplifier and control mixing unit:

and the 3-axis sensor:

There are "spy" photos that indicate perhaps a future all-in-one version may be in the works.

To make this heli 3g what is needed? Do you just add the electronics side of it and remove the flybar or is there a kit?

Buy the 550e 3G kit. It's all in there.

There are two versions of the kit. 550e (standard), 550e 3G -- FBL.

The 550e 3G kit comes with the FBL head and the 3G sensor/amplifier stuff. Build it, install the electrics, go fly it.
