A thread like this is what the forums should all be like. It's informative with all the posts positive with the goal of trying to help SeismicCWave solve his problems. Nothing negative, no bashing or name calling. Chris offering to help is an added bonus. THIS is what the hobby is all about. I remember back when if you didn't have help it was almost impossible to learn to fly.
I can't wait to hear what Chris finds out.

SeismicCwave, I didn't read your entire post, but just in case you haven't found a easy source for oil you may want to try your local "HONDA" motorcycle dealer ! I use Honda HP-2 synthetic and have been for over 15 years with ABSOLUTELY "NO" problems whatsoever ! If it ain't broke, don't fix it so I won't be changing oil ! Good Luck

LOL, as a matter of fact that was the first thing I was looking for. Unfortunately our local Honda dealer is over 100 miles away.

I think it may be easier to find a local boat dealer.

Seismic, Knowing what I know about that oil I would order it from a Honda dealer.I am sure you could order it from the dealer thats 100 miles away. I sent a 3W-120 engine back for a checkup before I sold it and was told the engine was "perfect" inside ,so with no bearing or wear issues in the past I will stick with the HP-2 . Good Luck

I have heard the Honda oil is good. I will pick some up next time I drive over to the west side of the island.

Well....I have SeismicCWave's engine here.

Curious, Why did you put the metal plate back on it?

A few things that I notice, The end of the tapered crankshaft needs to be rounded off, makes installing the fan and getting less than .002" of runout MUCH easier.

The engine has a peculilar smell to it, I suspect it's the oil used, and there ARE brown stains (rust?) on the crank and connecting rod.

The engine does NOT feel or look well lubricated, with very minor carbon deposit on the crown of the piston.

The carb appears fine, the screen is clean, the insulator block is nice and flat, no warps or cracks.

If you look very closely in one of the pics, you will find what MAY be wrong with this engine.

I'll leave the post alone for a day or two, or until someone spots what I spotted.

So my question is, and we may never know the answer, is WHEN? Has it been like this the whole time, or did SeismicCWave install it backwards at some point?

Anyway, I will turn it around, reassemble the engine, and install it in my bird to see if it makes any difference.

How about this, should I run it AS IS? Just to see? THEN turn it around?

Agree, when is a great question. But I would be very comfortable putting my money that is the problem.

That stain may be "baked on lubricant" from it running hot ?The smell is probably coming from heat also.
