I've been using pcs for a long time. I use norton 360. I also remove viruses manually, if I have to. The last time I reloaded the OS on this system is when my hard drive developed a bad boot sector and I bought a new drive and used my old drive as a slave to remove needed data. Since the day I've owned it to the point of the new hard drive and then from the new hard drive to now, I have not experienced any major slow down in my pc. I've had this one for around 3 years and I bought it as a gaming pc with dual video cards in sli mode. I don't load every software that every web site posts. I also avoid clicking on links in emails that seem questionable. Less junk you have running on it the better. Unless you just want junk on your computer.

Man, I miss the eighties.

I'm probably going to dual boot with Snow leopard so I can write some Iphone apps if I can get around to it. Just utilities, probably nothing worth publishing.

I usually go to freemalwarebytes.org and download the free version. It runs a scan deleting all malware(somtimes you have to run the scan twice to get everything), it will improve speed dramatically

If you only have to bend over once to pick it up it's a good landing.

have you heard of "deepfreeze". it is a driver level software that will literally write protect your hard disk. you can load any malware or as many virus you want into your pc and once its reset everything is wipe clean. your pc will boot up consistence the same way everytime and will never loose speed over time. you friends or kids can play on it all they want or install what ever they want and when the pc is reset all is wipe. no changes is kept.
alot of college and schools and cyber cafe are using this software to protect their computers. i'm using it myself with great results.

read more on it if you need to know more.
an alternative is call steady state, but deepfreeze is better and faster.

no need for resource hogger malware and anti virus protection.

I just use Eset virus software and don't open every email attachment and don't have a problem. The great thing about Eset is that I barely know it is there. No obnoxious notifications. Just a tiny window fades in an out in the corner when it updates, finds something, or needs money.

so you are going to allow someone to diagnose your pc online. imagine if you do online banking. "clean up your pc and clean out your bank account." I cleaned up a few viruses on a laptop we have by using the software i get from my cable company as well as doing a registry cleanup.

might as well buy a few of these also!
