Well its been alittle over a year now since I started my new carreer as a correctional officer,,I have to say I am glad to be working but it sure has taken a toll on me...Leaving work at work is hard..i was moved to the Mental Health ward and its nothing like i have ever dealt with before..Lets just say the inmates down there are nuts,,I guess thats why they are there..I find myself not being able to turn officer mode off when I'am not at work...And i find myself looking at people like they are offenders,,,I really am hopin Santa brings me a new job,,,lol,,,,,Any advise would be welcomed..

Just having that gig on your resume should bring you credibility and value in the eyes of any potential future employer. Not many could survive that work in one piece.op-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-t

Welcome to C/O's world. I've been in corrections for 16 years now. Wish I could say it gets easier, but I'm not sure it does. Keep your head up and remember to be thankfull that there are so many out there that are willing to screw up their lives so that we can have a job.

But realy, I have battled with this myself and have ended up being nicer at work and try to treat everybody as people, especialy my family. Good luck, It takes a very different type of person to survive in this line of work.

There was conducted an experiment one time. Students were divided on two groups: prisoners and guard and they were let go with this. Experiment was shortly stopped, due to the fact that violence of all kind started to happen. And there was real threat to mental health of participants of both groups. So just pronouncing who is in power screwed up good, educated kids. Just a thought.

Run.

Looking at people differently...
This is a typical hangup that most of the new officers tend to fall into. We ALL have done some things that either could have landed us inside or at least started us down the path.
This is where you could start getting cynical,DON'T. The easiest way to keep this from happening is to remember that your not perfect either. And I'll say this from my own perspective(and rcgeek may back me up on this)don't look at what they have done, it will only make it harder to do your job and perform your duties. You still have to treat these guys as people.
Don't judge them for what they have done, thats not your job. Don't hold a grudge if you get beat out of a ticket or an inmate pulls something over on you, use it as a learning experience. If you stew on the fact that you got beat, it will be a long career for you. Don't be different, if you act the same way inside as you do outside than you don't have to worry about whether you have your game face on or not. It will also make it easier to just be you and leave work behind. Don't lose yourself in there, be your own person, find the path that works for you and stick to it.
