Heating bill assistance on the news
As we watched the news the other night, they were interviewing a couple with 6 kids that were complaining about the cost to heat their home and how they wanted government assistance to help pay for their heat.

During the interview they cut to a close up of the thermostat which read 74 degrees...then cut to the couple who were sitting on the couch wearing T-shirts.

My wife and I blankly looked at each other as our thermostat sat on 68 degrees and we were wearing sweatshirts. I'm just sayin...

Not right at all.

Think they need to get rid of a kid or four. No thinking on their part. Poor planning.

Makes me sick.

Don't get me started.... I work for a utility company here in Kansas. IN the winter months we CANNOT shut off anyone for nonpay until April or the temperature is forecast to be above a certain temp. I agree some people need help, but when I show up to one of these deadbeats homes that refuse to pay their gas bill, but have brand new 50+ plasma TV's....
On top of it all, some people go as far as installing 2 water heaters. A natural gas for the winter when they "don't have to" pay their bill, and an electric water heater for when we shut off their gas in the spring. They go by all summer without paying, then when it starts to get cold, they can pay 1/12 of their bill, fire up the nat gas heaters and by law we have to turn them back on. Then guess what..the cycle starts over.

Sound like quite the system they got going there. Some people have all figured out. Like renters who have heat included. They blast it and when it gets too hot they open windows. When you make it too easy they take advantage of it.

All you have to do is let them freeze for a bit, they'll figure out real quick how to pay their bill.

Ours runs about $300.00 per month in the winter. And $65.00 in the summer. We keep the temp betwen 68-70. Sometimes we wear a jacket, or toebogen in the house. We have a kerson for backup, just in case $$$, or ice takes a line down.

Thats the problem, we CAN'T let them freeze a little bit. Regulations prohibit us from shutting them off in the winter...even if they don't make a single payment.

We may not be able to shut them off as we are an advanced caring society.

But, the least we can do as an advanced caring society is be "responsible" and make them do a pee test and require US citizenship before handing out each gov check.

There is more that we could do. But, thats the very least that we could do.

If we are an advanced, "irresponsible", caring society, then we just go on our merry way as we have in the past.

Not here, the only way they want shut your power off is if the temp is below 32 for three days in a row on, or about the day it's due to be disconnected, if the temp rises over 32 they will turn it off.

6 kids and can't make ends meet??... The only assistance from the government I'd like to see is a free vasectomy to America's useless eaters wishing for a free ride like that.

I understand you don't have the power to just shut them off and that's the problem. As long as they don't have to pay they won't and all the rest of us get to pick up the tab. I don't mind helping people but not when they purposely take advantage of the system WHICH IS WHAT THEY WILL DO EVERYTIME!!!!!!!!!!!

These people aren't poor or disabled, their freeloaders.

So anyone that don't bring is A Big Boat load of money is a free loader? Seems poor people who cant get ahead is worthless and a strain on the system? Everyone in the united states cant be track stars, jet pilots, lawyers, real estate sales, doctors, ect. Rich people who have had all their ducks just fall in a row for them their whole life are very fortunate, but not everyone is so fortunate. Give that land you inherited to a homeless person, and give that lotto money you won to the homeless shelter, and then give 10% of your income to the poor beggar on the street corner. You might be a strain on the system sometime yourself. Some people are plum lazy and would not strike a lick at anything. I know plenty of hard working people who have worked their whole life and hardly can put food on the table. One is particular individual worked for a toaster company proctor silex, and worked for 25 years and now paints cars, his back went out on him, and he want even take food stamps, because he could not get help when he needed it most. If it weren't for the super rich and greedy a-hole's that send work over seas, the rest of us might could get better jobs, and buy boats and condos like you rich guys that throw off on the less fortunate. Get off your high horses and take a bag of food to the salvation army and quite whining. Out of 300 million only about 40 million get welfare of some sort. The government and other agencies wastes more than that in dollars per day on sending junk mail.
If 100 million people get a advertisement or other junk mail, who pays for that? You do in some way or the other, so these people are lazy to for costing us money on **** we don't need?
Multiply that number of people alone, buy the price of a stamp that's a hell of lot of money wasted just on stupid junk mail. And then rick people whine because someone gets help.

Oh please, were talking about the people who PURPOSELY take advantage of the system. Relatively speaking very few people ACTUALLY need some form of welfare and I as most people have no problem helping them out.

You get off your high horse and stop standing up for free loaders buddy!!!!!!!!!
If it weren't for the super rich and greedy a-hole's that send work over seas, the rest of us might could get better jobs,
How about, if it weren't for the greedy politicians stealing money from our businesses and giving it to your group of free loaders they WOULDN'T HAVE TO MOVE OVERSEAS!!!!!! and you would be able to get a decent job. Do you actually believe they WANT to move overseas, they do it because its the ONLY way they can stay in business.

You clearly have no clue and obviously buy into basically anything that is said in the media.

RCFlyer. My problem isn't with the people that can't afford to pay their utility bill because of lack of funds. My problem is with the people who refuse to pay their bill because they know we can't shut them off and would rather spend that money on a 60" T.V.... I see it all the time. Cell phones, computers, big screen t.v's, new cars, the list goes on, but suddenly when it's time to pay their gas bill they have no money. Of course they can pay the electric bill because what good is a 60" t.v. with no electricity?
I donate my fair share through united way and donate even more throughout the year to other organizations and donate canned goods, clothes, toy's etc.
It's not always a problem of being poor. A lot of the time it is a lack of responsibility.
I was at one of these "poor" peoples homes just this weekend. Said they couldn't afford to fix their furnace. Meanwhile, their son was busy telling me about his new PS3 and his sisters Xbox 360 they got for Christmas. Doesn't sound so poor now. BTW, they did have about a 42" t.v.

Reminds me of some of my old roommates who couldn't make the rent even though they went out almost every night, were always buying new clothes, and had no problem buying their booze and "other" amenities.

Sorry but it really pisses me off when someone trys to defend this type of behavior.

I agree. I have a friend who is a self employed carpet installer. He has been waiting for one of his customers to pay him for a month or two. So, what does he do, he goes out and spends $1000+ on Christmas, than complaines he doesn't have the money to pay bills. For pete sake, why does an 8 year old need her own video camera? That's the kind of stuff they buy for their kids. Hell, looking at their entertainment center the other day they have about 40 Wii games. Plus their X Box 360 and all those games.

Just to switch things around and offer a different point of view about PEOPLE WHO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SYSTEM. I was dealing with a female who was detained for theft. Once arrested, I searched her purse. I found 4 EBT cards in her wallet. For those of you who do not know, an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card is a state of California welfare card. Instead of mailing out food stamps and cash aid, they issue the money on an ATM type card to people on welfare. They can spend the money anywhere and on anything.

Well, the people on welfare are supposed to show ID when the cards are issued. And, you of course are only allowed to get one card per person. Having two cards under different names is against the law. But this lady had 4 EBT cards. One from Orange county, LA county, Riverside county and Sanbardino county. Each card had a different variation of her name, changed only slightly. And each card gets her about $1500 per month of our tax money.

So how did she wind up with four cards? Simple, she just signed up - once in each county. Since she is in the country illegally, she has no ID. But the social workers just take her at her word and issue her a card. Then she went to the next county and uses a slightly different name and gets a second card and so on.

Bottom line, she is milking the system for about $6000 per month tax free. And you and I are paying for it... Boy, just think what you could buy with $72,000 tax free per year! -Steve
