battery choice for a starter?
I am wanting to add a battery to my starter so I dont have to carry my flight caddy everywhere I go to fly. What size should I go with? I am placing an order with hobbyking and will add it to the order.
thanks
Jeff

I am using a 5S LiPo with my Hobbico starter. Velcro'd it to the starter and only have to charge it once a year, 3800mah.Team Synergy/Rail, Team Scorpion, YS Engines, VelTye

Do you think that a 5s 20c 3000 pack would work out?

If it is a 12v starter, I would suggest a 4 cell. Fully charged is over 16 volts. 5 cell will be pushing a 12 volt starter pretty hard. 2200 mah will work, you will have to charge more often. 3000 mah and fly for weeks without charging. I am currently using a 4 cell 3000 mah 35c discharge and it is the go to starter for the 90's at our field easily out powering all other starters. I first used 2 2 cell 2200mah packs, but needed them for some flight packs.
You will be very pleased with the starter.

The 5S pack is 18.5 volts, no issues at all. You could use a 4S or even a good 3S pack. Not sure how the starters are rated voltage wise, but I have seen many use 18 volts with no issues. The latest piece is the 18 volt pack from cordless equipment that attaches to the end of the starter. A123 cells are common for this setup.Team Synergy/Rail, Team Scorpion, YS Engines, VelTye

.

That's a darn good idea as I have the trusty old Hobbico as well. I never thought to do that and don't want to spend the extra cash for the Helimax or Align starter.

One question though: Did you just cut the cord and solder on a connector and if so, what kind (deans or EC3)? Pic (pretty please)?

Sorry for the brief hijack op.

I had been using the 2 7.2v nicad setup (with the little holder that bolts to the starter, slide the nicad car packs in) and was flying a 10S model. I had one battery go bad, left me with 1 odd 5S pack, so, new starter battery. All I did was change the connector I had (sermos) and put deans on the starter and was ready to go.

I used Deans also and keep the original cord in my field box so I can use the trusty old 12v if the lipo ever dies.

I would use a pack of A123 cells

No fire hazzard and 1000 + charge cycles easy and fast field
charging in 15 minutes.
