Exactly jsenicka, that's what I did. Learned thumbs, tried pinch, went back to thumbs, why, fingers weren't long enough in my opinion when having to deflect the right stick fully left and vice versa. Also, it felt "foreign" to me as well. But, yes, give both a try, you might even find that you can do a combination of the two possibly. Again, for me (and this is what I've been told by people who know what they are doing in this hobby, .a.k.a. pro heli pilots at fun flys etc.) Do what feels best for YOU! Also, there are a very many pro pilots who are thumb only.

Oh, and as my good buddy on here Rogman88 pointed out, I'm a thumb only guy BUT, I do use a radio sling/strap. Why!? Well, it does calm me down a bit too, and, it gives me a good feel/hold with the radio. i.e., that's it's not going anywhere and God forbid, I won't drop it!

Also, and again (at least for me) thumb only flying really lets me "stick bang" so to speak. So, the technique that you probably ending up using will not only be the one that feels the most comfortable for you, but will suit your flying style as well.

In closing, keep in mind, eventually, your muscle memory, if you will will rule out. What I mean is, say you've been a "thumb only" pilot for a long time (such as me). Well, now my muscle memory is built and "trained" if you will for how I hold the TX and using my thumbs only on the sticks. If I suddenly change now to a pinch technique (which I've tried recently) or vice versa, your muscle memory is going to be off. i.e. it will feel like that you have to "re-learn" everything and it will feel real (again) foreign to you.

And yes, you'll probably need or want more expo with thumbs only than with the pinch technique as I found this to be true for my experiences as well.

Therefore, my best advice to you would be, yes, try both, decide on which one to use/fly with and stick with that one and don't flip-flop back & forth. If you "flip-flop" you won't train (i.e. develop the necessary muscle memory) to be effective. At least, not in my book.

Just my 2 copper Lincolns worth here.

For a beginner, I'd say start, and get used to pinch. Thumbs tend to be wobbly, especially if your nervous. Pinching you'll be less likely to make a mistake as your hands are resting on top of the transmitter (if useing a neck strap and balancer) and you have two fingers on each stick rather than one. More smoother inputs, less slop.

Being a total n00b I'm gonna try to learn pinch. However, I have a feeling I'll end up as a thumber, I have 'well trained thumbs'... I own 2 Atari 2600's, 5 Xboxes, an Xbox 360, and a Wii. I play a lot of FPS games which require a combination of quick thumbs and fine movement for putting my cross hairs in a pin point spot quickly.

We'll see.

As I understand it, half the world class pilots use the same method as I do. If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter.

Fly whatever you're comfortable with they can both work great, it all boils down to pilot skill.

Strange but I pinch when flying helis and us thumbs when flying planes. Tried flying planes pinching and just can't do it for some reason. Tried using thumbs with helis and it just does not feel right to me.

I learned a long time ago with thumbs and I have never felt that restricted me in what I was doing. I tried fingers a few times but that just didn't workIt's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

I had RC cars and an RC boat when I was young so obviously flying thumbs feels more natural to me, when I first started with helis I just used my thumbs without even thinking about it, I didn't even know about pinching the sticks!

I know someone who pinches the sticks and as a result he cant reach full negative pitch in flight! All the other pinchers ive seen have had their thumb on top and finger infront.
60% of the time, it works every time!

One way is no better than the other.
Its whatever works best for the person flying!
I fly thumbs and find I have better range of motion just using my thumbs.
I've tried pinch and felt restricted with certain stick movements.
I like my gimbals set to the lowest height and a firm spring tension.
