Is it better to fly with your fingers or just the thumbs?
Just wondering which way will give me the best control and precision in the long run?

We have seen this debate often. Some will say pinch other will say thumbs. Use the one which is more comfortable for you. I've seen great pilots using both styles.Team Synergy, Rail blades, Team Scorpion, V-Team

It is better to fly with fingers or thumbs than other body parts.
^^^I've heard of guys flying with other body parts but I'm leaving that one alone
Thumb on left and pinch on right as a bad planker habit. Retrained left to pinch on the sim because my 4 point tic tocs were over/under rotating and I could be more precise using pinch. There are really good pilots who fly thumbs and many good pilots who pinch. I think Kyle Dahl flys like I used to fly but he does it much, much better than me.

If you select "search" here you'll find over a few dozen threads on exact subject with several opinions....Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

Which came first the chicken or the egg? The thumb/pinch question is about as old and can be argued both ways. For the record I pinch.

If you look at it from a purely mechanical/physiological standpoint, pinch is better because you are using fine motor movements. Thumbs alone are coarse motor movements. Expo while using thumbs can smooth it out while exp with pinch makes it feel slow. The downfall of pinch is you almost always have to use a strap. It is awkward otherwise, unless you have huge basketball palming hands. it also makes flipping other switches while flying more of a challenge. I pinch and use a strap as I feel more connected.

I use thumbs but sometimes wished I had learned pinch....I can't adjust the tension on the sticks with my Tx and sometimes my left thumb (mode 2) jumps and causes a pump.

Not this again. Just fly. With your toes if you have to, so long as you fly.

My hubby will be happy to see that I replied to this thread LOL

Since I have smaller hands, when I played around on the sim once, I found that for me, the pinch helped me to control a little better. I just didn't feel comfortable with the thumb flying because I felt like my hand was stretching too far to be in a comfortable grip.

In the long run, it's whatever feels the most comfortable to YOU! The hell with what and the way everyone else is "flying!" Also, finger length plays a role when using the pinch technique as well.Team Pilot for RCHeliWorkz

The downfall of pinch is you almost always have to use a strap.
I have noticed this as well. I never used a strap till I started flying helis. It helps calm me down, plus when I switched the left hand to pinch now I need another point of stability. Pinch on the right hand also allows me to keep my middle finger on hold

I did thumbs on planks for nearly 30 years on and off flying.
2 years ago I went to a modified pinch on helis. Thumb on top of stick, forefinger on front of stick pulling it into my thumb. I get pinch control, and can flip to thumb for fast full stick moves like piros.
I also went from needing 25% expo to needing none to feel planted in the center of stick. Do what feels right for you, but give both a try.

Pretty much how I fly too, thumb somewhat on top of the stick and pinching it. I also run the stick spring tension about as tight as the radio will go, helps me feel where center is. I don't run much expo (probably should have some though)
