HBK 3 head
Hi guys,
I've been gone for a while, but I have decided to get the K-3 back in the air. Well what I want to know is what are some of my options for replacing the head. I have a cnc head for it but its cheaply made and I don't like it much. I also want to get rid of those oval shaped push rods. I don't know if that can be done without going to a trex or clone head. Or if anyone makes a good head for it.

Ok, ok. I am here. I did not respond because I do not have the best solution. I do not want to misguide. I have cnchelicopter head on mine. It is not ideal. It mimics stock head in design with o-rings. Unfortunately all my attempts to make it better failed. Probably I will have one more try (Xtreme head) until I run out of patience and $$$, but from what I see already looks like my last attempt will fail. I use this head. It flies. It is not ideal, but it does its job. I use CF stock paddles (they are sure faster) and CF stock blades. I never tried rex or any other head, because it seems to me it will be more headaches, then just flying what I have.

Glad you are here.

Thanks kv, I was just wondering what the general thoughts on it were and who had tried what, I'm not sure what I am gonna do just yet. I'm just sick of looking at the poor little king all broken and busted, I may just get the plastic parts to slap her back together. I am getting the fever again as it is getting close to tax refund time and I was hoping that getting the king going might keep me from buying another bird this year. I was thinking of a 4g6s, or a 250 size something. Also found another K3 that if i could get cheap enough might just turn the one i have now into a parts bird. Anyway thanks for your input.

You know, HBK starts to be unpopular at all. Sure there are reasons for this. 250 - will be a bit more twitchy and you cannot fly it at home. 4G6s - I do not have 'S', but I have 4G6 - flies nice, if being tuned. Not that much tweachy, can hover a little bit off sticks. Not powered much for 3D - collective management is required. People say it is too big to fly at home. Maybe, but I fly (when I started, CX2 seemed to me too big to fly in a room). It is tiny enough to have room flying. Expensive though, because it requires separate Tx, although crashability is good, because repairs are cheap: blades - $5.
Good idea there to change motor (~$40) and dampeners ($2?), although stock for mad hovering (FF, BF, sideflight, etc is OK).

Yeah the fact that I have to use their tx kind of puts me off of the 4g6, I saw one in the classifieds on another site that has been spektrumized, but then I end up with someones mods that I may or may not be able to figure out, fix, and find parts for. I was wanting something to fly here indoors, I know that a 250 is way to big, and has way to much head speed. I have a 4g3 v1 with brushed motors that I refuse to spend any more money on. I bought it used, and it has never been right, bad servos, bad tail motors, tail won't hold even after I got the head right on it and it was mostly vibe free. That is what has me afraid of the 4g6 if I get one I want a new one and they are very expensive if the quality isn't any better than the 4g3. I would like to see one and hold it in my hand and take a look at it before I part with the cash to buy one. But I don't know anyone around me that has one. I may just go to LHS and get a blade msr and hope that cures my itch for a while. I was also thinking of putting the hbk electrics in a cheap clone of some sort, but it would probably be underpowered. I should just order a plastic head and put it back together and fly it. I dunno..

I'm running the original purple CNC stuff from Esky. It works OK, but is over priced for what it is. There are less expensive versions of the purple stuff available, but many have reported fitment issues with the knock offs. I could never get the plastic head to work well and would never waste my time again like that. If you try and then find an unsolvable tracking issue, well... I told you so. About the oval shaped pushrods, many don't like them. But the truth is, they are not as bad as many people think. The design is copied from a Raptor head that was top of the heap for many years before Align. You can get rid of the hoops with an Xtreme pushrod upgade, which works ok, but has its own issues.

As for new heads, the Xtreme head looks pretty nice. But is expensive and is often out of stock everywhere. Sadly, you could take the money for HBK2/3 head a easily apply to the purchase of Trex Pro clone and end up with a much better model.

My HBK2/3 still sits on the shelf. I keep telling myself that I should get it airworthy again for old times sake. But I never seem to find the time. But I continue to dream about different options with it. My latest plan was to move to a flybarless head and go with a BeastX flybarless controller.

yeah I think it will probably be an expensive paper weight, I am wanting to get something different anyway. It was fun while it lasted but your right for what i put into it to get a new head I could get myself a 450 clone, or a 250 clone probably with a spare air frame for not much more money. I've been looking around and that's probably what I'm gonna do here in a month or so. I dunno so many things I want to do and so little money to do it with, story of my life..lol.

I will not vote for HBK restoration for sure, because there are better options (cheap clones). But:

I just flew couple of times Rave and right after that HBK (incarnation of HBK). You know, completely not worse. It flies fine. (It carries tic-toks, piroflips (ok, ok, half-piro, half-flip fine)). Blades tracking, I did not touch for a long time. It is on right spot and does not deviate. Only negative is a short flight time. About 4 min of intensive flying. Also during last flight I managed heavily bog the head. But tail did not blew out, so it is OK. Still Rave has more power. I was doing tic-tocks near the ground, screwed up and was saving. No, I am not right. I was TRYING to do tic-toks near the ground.

I thought of abandoning HBK, but looks like it is not time yet. And that's not matter of efforts spent. It is that it flies. But for sure, you have to keep tweaking it. Up to a degree this is with every heli in my experience. Just bolting all together does not work good. Just my 2 cents.

As for Xtreme replacement of o-rings, I was not happy. It was waste of $$$ for me. Tried different combinations and it was all bad. Maybe I did something wrong.

'New' Xtreme head - I bought half of it and looks like I need to buy second half, because my blade grips will not be compatible with flybar cage. New blade grips will mean new central hub most probably. So, I am not sure if I will proceeed. Only if extra $$$.

I have expensive HBK for sure, I have Quark, expensive tail and head which is not on a cheap side. Tip: cnchelicopter sometimes sells on fleebay where you can negotiate price. I bought tail from him like this. Was quite a bit cheaper, but definitely not on a cheap side. Quality is very good.

Rex clone - I do not know. Never had them, so no experience.

Well I bought a mini titan airframe and servos off of ebay, now if i just had some time off of work to do something with it.. lol. I still might want to try out a 250, but I'm not sure on that yet. As for the king I might just fix the plastic head so it is at least able to fly as I can't stand the thought of it sitting on the shelf all broken. Speaking of fixing the king, any body tried the cheap hk spektrum clone rx yet? I would like to bind the king with my dx6i and i don't want to spend a lot to do it.

I think you are going to like the MT, good choice. Odd canopy, but should be a good flyer. As for the HK Rx, been wondering that myself. If it doesn't work out for your HBK2, you could use it with a SIM stick.

The mt looks beautiful. I'm waiting on electrics. On the other hand I gut stomped my 4g3 tonight. Charged the batt, turned it on, threw it down and put my heel on it... didn't stop stompin till it was dead. I'm all done messing with it. But the mt looks like someone thought about it for a minute. I have the quick of japan, the king 3 and the mini titan, and the flat 4g3. But the mt is nice....sad that I had to kill the walker so that I could stop wanting it to fly. Did the brushed version ever fly??? I don't think it did.
