TAIL BOOMERANG - How Straight Should a Tail Boom Be
What is the maximum allowable (if any) Tail Boom run-out for a 250 class electric T-rex clone. I have had problems with burning out motors while trying to check blade tracking and have replaced suspect main shaft, one way and tail rotor bearings (they felt a bit rough) in an effort to avoid any binding. The tail boom had a slight wobble when I rolled it on a sheet of glass so I ordered a replacement pack of two tail booms. They both have a slight wobble, about the same as the original. So I am not sure if they were damaged in the post, if it is a quality control issue or an acceptable amount of run-out (there is about 1mm to 1.5mm run-out, the tail boom is 32.5 cm long).
Any ideas?

couple things to check

check the spacing for the main & pinion gear make sure there not to tight

also make sure the belt is in the tube correctly and you dont have it to stretched (pulled to tight)

if you burning motors you have some thing putting to much pressure on the motor
yes dear the hobby shop again

Were the gear mesh too tight? The runout should be fine as tail boom is not a turning part.

I've straightened out a few 250 booms by hammering a craftsman #3 Phillips screwdriver through them, perfect fit.

I have checked the gear mesh and there is a small amount of play so that should bo OK. I am worried about the run-out because it is a belt driven tail rotor. I am not sure what amount of run-out will cause the belt to bind.

as long as the teeth of the belt aren't catching on each other I'd be ok with flying it. could check the motor to see if the motor shaft is bent. Belt being ran too tight? Sounds like there is drag in the system somewhere.

As an experiment, (I don't recommend it)...I flew my 450 one afternoon two or three times with a boom bent about 20 degrees...Didn't piro flat, but otherwise flew fine....

After more inspection , I have fond the tail shaft gear is damaged. The design is a two piece arrangement and i think the pieces may have been misaligned when assembled hence distorting the teeth. I have also replaced a few bearings that felt a bit rough. I am still not sure how much tail boom run-out is acceptable. The tail boom is 32cm long and when rolled on a flat surface it is between 1mm and 1.5mm off the surface at its highest point one end, while the other is held down.
Cheers for the advice.

With a belt drive, as long as the belt is not rubbing on the inside of the boom you should be OK with the slight bend.Jeff Borowski
