I broke one of these in last spring on my Hirobo Freya and it takes quite a while. Mine was about 2 gallons of fuel. First thing is you should not be using the governor until it is broken in. I was told this a few times by different people. You just cannot get a constant head speed on an engine that is not broken in.

My temps would vary from about 190F to close to 250F. I finally had someone that was much better at three needle carbs take a look at it and what he ended up doing actually richening the middle range needle to about 2-1/4 turns. The high-end needle is still set at 2 turns. It has plenty of power and I flew it all year with no problems, even had a few people comment on how well it ran and sounded. Temp now is around 210F.

So you might want to richen up the mid-range needle a 1/4 or more and see how it behaves. Also turn the gov. off for now until you get it dialed in.

Hit it pretty close with mid range needle setting.
Iv been flying o.s for years but 2turns out seems more than sufficient on either needle but richen the mid range to start could never hurt anything.

Next big question, is it a pump or std carb version?

Pretty much bet you are detonating

Does motor hang when landing ? Open low a little ,sometimes people lower idle to get motor rpm to not engage clutch but the real issue is lean low end ,this will have some effect on tuning also do not use governor and hover and see what head speed and temps are after a couple of minutes .2 turns on mid and high is a safe start .I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

How many tanks of fuel through it? Mine took over 20 before it was really broken in. I'm running an Align pipe on mine. The idle screw is just a little past center, midrange is about 2-1/4 turns out and the high end is 2 turns out. It has a lot of power and a nice smoke trail.

First thing I thought when you say it get's hot sometimes, is that you have a leak somewhere. Especially if you haven't tweaked the needles around. You HAVE to have a leak free system to get a consistent running motor. rich or otherwise.
I will also promote SmackTalk RC as a good guide to engine tuning!

As for the shim, you'll probably get alot of different opinions. OS says use the .2 or more for 30%. Some people use the stock .1 for 30%. It's said that the more shims you use the easier it is to tune(less compression).

As long as you have plenty smoke trail and engine doesn't seem to be getting hot, "ROCK ON".

On the mid needle, between throttle transitions during tic-tocks or other maneuvers that require collective pumping, look for good smoke around half stick in between throttle transitions.

Reminder: make sure gov is always disabled for optimum tunning.

NEEDLE SETTING VARY MUCH FROM ENGINE TO ENGINE, AND FLYING STYLES.

The instructions give you a starting point. I had to run my HZ 2 3/4, high, almost 3 on mid for break in. Again, every engine is slighly diferent, and how you fly makes a BIGGER diference in the final needle setting.

Thats not counting, fuel, altitude and muffler!
GET IT!

have a nice day
