Ben,

Thanks for the correction. I must have misunderstood from Lee at Castle.

that would give a 9.33:1 ratio....

in my experience, mostly with automotive applications, the straight cut gears are stronger...but, I've heard others claim the helical cut gears are stronger in the heli applications...but, they will push the gears will want to ride up or down while in operation... see what Ben says about it

I can see what you mean about pushing gear up or down with the scerw effect. I would think it would be stronger as there is more contact area across(angle) the gear and pinion.
Can't be all bad as Logo's been doing it for sometime now.

Dan,

I doubt you misunderstood Lee, and he surely knows what he's talking about. You just have to consider all the circumstances in which the statement could/could not apply.

Helical gears of adequate size work well in models. They result is a sickly sweet mesh with dramtically less noise than straight cut gears. JR is using them in their flagship electric models.

Glenn,

You're already learning. You just don't know it yet :) .

Ben, there's a whole different learning curve to electric. I guess if you just go buy a kit with everything then its plug and play. Dark your going to miss the 700 , nothing flys like a 90 heli.

Of course I'll miss the 700, but I won't miss having my learning inhibited by the inevitable and currently financially prohibitive crash costs.

A 500 or maybe 600 size will be more palatable for me as my regular flier.

Jim,

Yes, that is one way to go, but I like the price of 500-size batteries and blades, and at the moment, the only 600 I'd consider is the Compass 6HV since it was designed to run on a pair of 500-size packs and not one mammoth and more costly 6s pack.

I already have a Sniper II that runs fantastic on 6s and spins 470mm blades, but may get another 500 (might stretch too) to run as well.

Update :
Changed motor to Align 700MX 530 ,changed blades to Edge 713 FBL along with tis i lowered the Pitch from 13 to 12 and cyclic from 10 to 9 .. Now playing with Headspeeds from 2050 to 2100HS .. Going to change the 115 main to 117t FAD Mod 1 .

THe bigger blades really felt much lighter and Auto's are back.. I did increase my Cyclic response in the SK720. The motor runs really cool and has fanstantic power. MY 3D flight time are 5:45 minutes and with new gear may be 6 minutes.

Last Updated I think :)
700CE when on a diet , was 11 lb 13 oz by changing the ESC from CC ice 120 to Kontronik HV80 w/heatsink . Now using HV80 BEC @ 6 volts with Fromeco DC-UP MarkII Cricket to maintain even 6 v thru the flight, also add small 5 cell NiMh 180 mah Buffer pack for the electronic just in case I lose power for some reason..

Then removed the Skookum Bus Bar, FAD Mod 1 117t main gear, NRG 3600 Rx battery, the battery switch.I changed from the Align MX530 to MX510 with stock gear and my flight time are at 6:30 minutes of 3D flying.

I just got the new 110T M1.0 Herringbone Main Gear and 11t pinon (M3D600 & T-REX 700E) from RCEhobby.com gear ratio put heli @ 77% = 2050HS , heli is much quieter and smoother running .I really havn't had time to see if my flight times improved but will see.

So now the RTF weight is 11 lbs. Which really makes the heli feel so much better as the rolls and flips have smoother, lighter feel. I which to Thunder Power 45c 4400's as I had 1 overdischarge on Voltz 5100 and they when down hill from there.
Updated on flight time: 5 minutes hard 3D and 5:45 with mixed 3D/FFF. THe TP have great power and come down cool everytime.

Here's couple pictures.
Oh I'm another one that switched over to EC5 plugs
