Even if you don't have power at your field. The cost of a generator and gas is still less than nitro over a couple of years. Personally, I could go through $2K in nitro fuel in a year. We get to fly all year in Florida, so that's a lot of flying.
+1
But I luv my gens, because they don't tie me to a certain place that has a plug...they are a "portable plug", which sort of just magically follows me where ever I go flyin'...

Just saying not all fields have power... What does a good generator go for these days? on top of the charger to get those C ratings... I'm still crashing and that's a whole different reason for me to stay away from electric, never had a nitro crash set my heli on fire And before I hear funky chicken claims with nitro, I am the owner of the blade 400 chicken dance video where rx had issue on impact and it ate itself

Just usin' my gens...coverting a little gas into A LOT of flyin'...anywhere!
So let me see if I understand this correctly. Your using an internal combustion engine to convert gasoline into electricity to charge your "clean" electric helicopters all in an attempt to get away from the noise, smell, and inconvenience of internal combustion engines. Hmm kind of seems like you're defeating the purpose a bit. Shouldn't you be using something like a portable fuel cell generator instead of gasoline.

Hey Bob, talk about efficiencies. Take a look at the ratio of responses to views on this thread. It is a 1:9.7 ratio at this point. That may be the highest yet on any long RR thread.

blazen, our local power company uses "clean natural gas", at least that's what T. Boone Pickens calls it, so I feel very green with my electrics.

Well the field I like to fly at doesn't provide electricity and the last time I was at the site, there were 5 people with portable generators running all day. At this point do to the constant noise and smell the club is seriously considering banning portable generators near the pits. Even though I fly electrics I can't really blame them. On that day the winds were calm and The constant nose and noxious fumes from the portable generators filled the pits to the point where it was almost unbearable.

That's how we got the club to pay for electric power. Everyone started bringing generators. The noise, smell and general nuisance of it pissed enough people off that the vote to spend the coin on electric was unanimous. Hurray for cheap Harbor Freight generators!

Well the nearest utility is quite a ways away and the estimate is close to $20K to bring power in, so its not going to happen anytime soon. Another club I know of is looking at ways of metering power at individual outlets and converting the existing outlets to 220. They have a lot of people flying large electrics most with dual 6 cell setups with multiple large chargers sucking upwards end of 500 to 700 watts out of the outlets while charging. I'm not sure what that particular club pays per kilowatt hour but when your looking at a flying field full of machines that produce 1000's of watts of power the costs start to become substantial enough that its no longer feasible to provide the power for free. Granted the actual costs might only be a few dollars per day per person but over a month of flying it adds up quickly.

Very funny post...however, since I have to get the power from somewhere, and even though I've been called a "watt head" I can't just pull it out of my a$$. So, a portable(lets me fly anywhere) Honda plug in is my best alternative. The Honda 2000i is the least intrusive gen that I know of...VERY QUIET INDEED(I actually had a visitor ask if my gen was even running once, he couldn't believe it!) and not too bad on the exhaust. And I don't even have to wipe the slime off of it when finish for the day, as I did with the N's...it is much cleaner! Plus, I can charge all day on 1/2 - 2/3's of a gallon of reg!

Cool idea though when it becomes available.
all in an attempt to get away from the noise, smell, and inconvenience of internal combustion engines.
Not all of them, after all I drive a PU to the flyin' site with one in it, and my gen has one. Just want to get away from the nastiness of glow...

Since we are on the subject of the nastiness of glow what about the environmental impact involved in manufacturing and disposal of lithium cells and it nasty effects on the environment or is this one of those situations where if you don't see it or it doesn't directly effect you it doesn't exist or matter?

We're gonna make 100 pages yet! I haven't been able to find much info on the manufacturing impact yet, but as far as disposal, lipo companies say when one goes bad put it in salt water until it's fully discharged, then throw it in the trash! It doesn't sound like there is any more environmental impact in disposal than with household garbage... So, there Mr. Blazen, do you like apples? How do you like them apples??? Keep it comin' we'll make 100 pages!!

Hey Bob, I just figured out how you could pull power to charge with out of your a$$. Just learn how to harness that Methane gas and use it for gen fuel like they do at the big land fills!
