OMG FOX NEWS & WALL STREET JOURNAL
Steve Moore of WSJ on FOX now pushing METHANOL over gasoline.
With gas over $4, methanol is new choice at about $1.20/gal.

Nitro will either be cheaper and easier to get or go through the roof.

The law of supply and damand says if demand goes up, so will the price!

Have you seen the price of balsa wood lately? Apparently they are using it now in those big wind generator propellers so the demand has gone up. Now a box of balsa has almost doubled in the past decade!

One day on my death bed I won't be thinking I wished I'd flown more helicopters though. But those girls being with me will make all the difference in the world
+1

OK, so far the posted advantages for nitro are "noise and smoke", and a couple more mins of fight time(on 700 size)...

conclusion:

Nitro = Novelty

FLAME SUIT ON !!!
3344 posts - 167 pages & IN CONCLUSION:

If you can fly with adequate power, tune & engine, tolerate a bit more noise & smoke, use cleaning solutions properly, & don't mind being considerd 'Outdated'
NITRO

If you need excessive power (sloppy flying skills??), only want 'Plug & Play', have severe time restrictions, sensitive hearing & are allergic to smoke & cleaning solutions
ELECTRIC

Rock on Cuzz!!! Unfortunately my daughters are in competition dance. That's a car note per month and a severe hit to my personal enjoyment

I'll take that spoon for a bit.
You know, I'm sorry. That is a very admirable excuse. You gave up Nitro for your girls. Right thing to do. And, it's OK, electrics are GREAT. You're not missing anything.

I know....I'm a jerk...heh heh.

Blade farting yes Lon, but that 700E with the straight cut was SUPER noisy indeed!
Given that helical gears are less efficient than straight ones, is it really worth it for a little noise?

That applies to just about everything EXCEPT oil/gas. The supply is exceeding demand right now so Saudi is limiting production. At the very same time,,nervous speculators are driving the oil prices up thru the roof! We will be $5/gal by summer.

Noise is fine, its the type of noise that the straight gears put out, its a high pitched scream and its horrible!

I don't have time for nitro anymore.

Plug and play all the way!

come on, is there really any doubt which is more powerful. Nitro (for the moment) has the advantage of slighlty longer run times, but if you want sheer power, electric is the way to go. If you watched tareq flying a protos, the nitro videos look like there a bit slow, almost in slow motion in comparison.

Electric rules
Nitro drool's....oil

Doesnt it make you wonder why some of the more prolific designers such as Henseleit made public statements on their site that the future is obviously electric and went so far so to discontinue their nitro line cause they believed it so much. Where as we are speculating and having fun, these guys are staking serious money on the fact, and i believe they are right.

As far as i see it, nitros and electrics are:
nitro>electric for runtime
electric>nitro for sheer power
nitro>electric for setup cost (cost to get in the air)
electric=nitro for long term cost

At this point, its really up to personal preference, but as someone said earlier, at some point in the near future, nitro will likely be a novelty and electric the obvious choice. Not so much because its "cooler", but more for the fact that it will be easier, as well as more economical.

Can't fight economics, steam power was awesome at one point and competed again diesel/gas, but look where that went..............

Nitro will always have a draw, but its hard to contest that the days of nitro are almost over. Planks are probably the best evidence. Heli's generally need more peak power and for that reason they have stayed more nitro heavy until now, but look at how many people are flying electric planes now compared to 10 years ago. Do they do it because it cooler? probably not. They do it because especially for planks you can gear for optimum power as well as the fact that for .50 or lower planes, its usually less expensive as well as less messy, more convenient, and more fun (fun being construed in this cas as number of minutes enjoying yourself vs. number of minutes fussing with engine tuning, fueling, etc)

Hard to argue with that logic, even harder in a couple years.

When people asked the resident flying field heli guy with all sincerity a couple years ago why my stock trex 500 could outclimb his raptor 90 and he said "well, electric can hold a load better" that tells you where things are heading.

i've flown both and i can push an electric much harder, i'm no pro, but its nice to know if you get a bit heavy handed, you don't hear your engine go "brouggggghhh" and lose headspeed.

If you like nitro, keep on enjoying your modern day equivalent to steam engines. Your time is almost up. And unless you really are a pro (like tareq and many others), you wont' be able to manage the collective and tail quite so well wit extreme pitches. Have fun rebuilding.

I know, i know. I'm not crazy flier either, but my logo 600 12s can only handle about 15 degrees of pitch at 2200 rpm, i know its not much, but we get by.
