That was an amusing flurry of posts actually.

Anyway, I've been thinking about another aspect of this. Not sure if it has come up before.

Which, Nitro or electric, is more profitable?
Now, this could be a huge area for debate just in itself. The question of more profitable to who adds a bunch of variables.
A local hobby shop.
An online retailer.
Kit manufacturer.
Power system manufacturer.

An example of what I'm considering is that I think a LHS would stand to do better with Nitro because fuel sales helps bring people in. Even though it costs a little more there, I tend to buy my fuel at a LHS. Gives me a good reason to go there every now and again and then I enjoy the people and thumbing through all the other stuff while I'm there. Batteries though, I tend to buy on-line. The LHS is either going to have a small selection or they are going to be older batteries than you would expect to get from a high volume on-line shop. And then there's the question of who do we want to support?

I haven't drawn any conclusions or anything...just wondering about it is all.

That is, we had a BUNCH of rain this weekend.

Hmmm interesting. Not really fighting material, but interesting to ponder anyway Bob.

Lipos you really don't order and keep on the shelf like nitro. I would think unless you are a hobbyshop that moves alot of heli/airplane/buggy stuff that lipos wouldn't be as beneficial to have around as one may not know when they would sell. Most people buy Lipos online, believing that the lipo has just come out of the factory even though it may have been sitting on the shelf in a warehouse for several months.

Online retailers probably benefit the most, especially with the free shipping over 100$. I know I'll tag on some extra parts if I'm going to max out an order of lipos anyway, thus benefiting the retailer further.

My LHS doesn't cater to heli's so is about worthless to me in any case.

There's far less shelf time anymore especially with popular sizes. We're talking less then a month. It's an expense to produce so definitely more so of a demand activating the production line. Recently in speaking with TP 95%+ of popular sizes are in pre shipped form less then two weeks.

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

IMO

Electric has more power, performance is better, sharper, quicker but I would never buy one. From what I have seen to get the most out of it you need super fast reactions, which I don't have. You need lots of batteries, which need looking after more so than a nitro engine. You may spend some time charging if you can't afford to buy lots of batteries, which I can't, regardless of the cumulative cost of fuel which suits me more. I, like most other people, get paid monthly so there's not one big hit on the bank account.
I have owned one electric heli, a t-rex 600, before the nitro way available. It was fun to fly but many of the above statements became evident very quickly. Although the battery tech and prices are better today, I just want to fly, I couldn't do an electric heli justice at the moment.

I'd say IC is more profitable as it wears out much faster and the fuel cost is so high, esp if one flies a lot. Those seem to be the main reasons we don't have a lot of E cars(full size) out there yet either as IC cars are so profitable to industry with all there maintenance and wear issues.

the dead horse still taking a beating ?

nitro still rules
like to see an electric keep up with me at the places I fly

oh you need a hand to carry your generator

" nitro still easier to carry even with a full field box "

but if you would rather drop a $1K for a generator
another 3-400 for a power supply and another 3-400 for a charger and then another 3-400 for 2 6S batteries just to fly be my guest

my house does have hydro but not the field near by nor can you park close by either but for me it's a 10 minute walk.

electrics wouldn't have the fun time that I would

how about an electric heli charged up by a nitro fueled generator?

since we're burning fuel to charge up

of course nitro wins hands down
the electric guys just won't admit it.
