I am posting this for a friend with a 500. Can you run a 500 with 550mm blades, but with a 600 3D tail boom? Anyone doing that? If so, any negatives? Thanks.

No negatives really no. You can certainly do that, it will just look like an extra long boom being you are running smaller blades, it will perform just fine. May have to move lipos further ahead to compensate COG is all.

Remember stock 500 boom is capable of running 560mm mains to note as well.

The reason he wants to switch is because his belt recently caused a bad failure. He sorta went the long way round and converted a flybar'd Logo 500 to a Vbar'd 500 SE. There have been a lot of growing pains along the way. Anyways, he accidentally flipped the belt inside out twice. The belt functioned and appeared to be ok to both of us. Ten seconds into the flight, the belt came out of the idler pulleys and ate the idler pulleys up and the frames too. After he saw how easy it is to see down my tail boom on my 600, he wants to switch. One-hundred dollar mistake makes him not want to ever do that again. What parts would he need. I believe he would need the new spacers for the carbon tail case, the spacers for the horizontal fin, ditch the inserts in the frame for those thin insert stoppers and the belt. Anything else?

I assume the tail case sides are the same as the 600 and the spacing between the holes on the horizontal fin will allow it to be reused. Thanks for your help.

I dont know the numbers off hand, but a manual will show all of what is needed.

Belt
Boom
Pushrod
Boom Supports
TR Case and diff tr shaft and bearings etc in it..

Sorry I been packing and I dont have all that or a manual handy. But if you take a quick look at one, it is all pretty obvious for sure.

If he wants to use 550mm mains and keep it at 500/500se length (for looks or COG), he can always cut down the 600 boom. The 500/500se looks much more proportional with the fatter cut down 600 boom.

Just remember that the 600 boom is 25mm not 20mm so he will need the 600 tail case also.

I figure I'll eventually upgrade my L500 to a sawed-off 25mm boom + carbon tail case, didn't look that expensive.

Actually, I found it a really good upgrade. I cut the 600 boom to 500 length and eliminated the boom braces since the added diameter makes it plenty strong. You then can use the 600 tail assembly--it's an open tail that's very nice. I added a couple of pulleys to the rotor belt tensioner to keep the belt on the pulley and it really works great and looks very unique/clean.

You do need to take out the 500 tail boom holder (grips the smaller boom) and put in the tail boom holder for the 600 (which just keeps the boom from hitting the belt pulleys in the frame).

It's a much more durable tail assembly, imo, the tail definitely doesn't twist when you fly it hard, and the belt will stay nice and anchored on the pulley.

I'd be interested in seeing what you did to your tail box for the belt idler. I've got a 600 and a 600SE but I always welcome learning a new way to do something better. Pic?

Sure--I'll snag one tonight. I scavenged my box of salvaged parts from past "events" for bearings (to serve as tensioners) and bushings for spacers...works great and I'm sure there are ready part sources to replicate easily. Tom

First photo shows the broom stick tail boom look, second is the spindle and bearings. Two of them are from a 500 tail case, the middle, I'm not remembering where it's from. It's a great set-up and *virtually* maintenance free though looks like it could use a little love--a cleanup and belt check. Tom
