I sent David Lawson (aka kickybanks from somewhere near Georgetown, Kentucky) my Spectra canopy and tail fins about 2 years ago along with some money to paint them. At this time he was supposedly running a canopy painting business called DLCanopies. Every couple of months I would send him an email asking him if the canopy was done, and he would always say, "Oh sorry, been busy with work" or "Oh sorry, been busy with the kids" or "Oh sorry, been too cold here to paint". So I finally got fed up with it and asked for my canopy back and a refund in July of this year. Well he called me up all apologetic and told me he would rush to get the canopy done in time for IRCHA. Now IRCHA has come and gone, and I am trying once again to get a hold of David Lawson--and he is not responding.

I wonder if anyone is from Kentucky and knows David Lawson, or I wonder if anyone else has been scammed by him for a canopy paint job? Ideally I would like to convince him to send my money and my canopy/tail fins back, but at the very least I think it would be good to let others know my mistakes in dealing with him so that they do not do the same.

He had told me every time I talked to him that he had lot of issues going on in his life and that he was really sorry for taking so long. I guess the biggest thing that he kept telling me every time I talked to him was that "I'm so sorry" and "I'll get it right out to you".

In August of 2009, David Lawson sent me these photos of my canopy and tail fins:

He told me at that time that it was getting too cold in Kentucky to continue painting, and that he would have to wait until next year to finish painting my stuff. Not wanting him to screw it up (from water condensation or whatnot), I said that would be fine. He even offered to paint a second canopy for me for free, but I would have to wait until next year when it was warmer. Seeing as I already had another canopy and set of tail fins on the heli, I told him this was fine. He promised me that he would make the canopy/fins look really nice.

That name sure sounds familiar. I have a note tagged to his name to never deal with him, but I can't remember what the reason was. I'd say it's a very safe bet you'll never see a refund or your canopy and fins back.

He is definately lying about it. According to his logic all the autobody shops would have to shut down for 4 or so months out of the year. Even if his shop he paints in isn't heated he should be able to get a space heater to make it work. Bottom line is he's had over 2 years to take care of you and he's blowing you off with lame excuses. If I were you I'd tell him to box up your stuff and send it back and find someone else to paint them for you. You'd be lucky to get your stuff back, forget about getting any of your money back. This guy probably spent that a long time ago.

Justin,

I live in Kentucky, just so happens that I live in Georgetown.

That name is VERY familiar, I just can't put a face to it right now. I'll have to do some checking around with friends and my law enforcement buddies and see if I can dig him up.

If he is a "want to be" canopy painter, then I assume that he is into helis. He has never been to any of the area flying clubs that I know of. If he does mess with helis, then he must go at it alone.

Please PM me any and all contact info you have on him, including the address where you shipped the canopy.

I'll have a look see and see what I can find out. If I can get your stuff back, I'll be happy to ship it to you.

It does look like he was selling off most of his stuff back in May, June and July of this year. I also see where he has not posted anything since?
