Pretty sure they're a 9volt.

It's a rechargable, you use a receiver wall charger to charge it.

Either Nicad or Nimh

Capacity
Thanks Guys,

I was looking for the capacity, I still use an Alpha 4 to charge what ni-cads I have left and was wanting to be able to program the charger correctly.

Thanks.....Dave

Better look close or open the case. I believe the red tach had the 9 volt and the new blue tach (up to 3000 headspeed) has the rechargeable, but I may be wrong.

Wow, an Alpha 4! I had one of those way back when.

Alpha 4
One of the best chargers I have owned. It has worked flawlessly for several years. Every time I plug it in, I hold my breath, I dread the day when it quits.
I did take the tach apart and it is a flat 4 cell pack. The blue one I previously owned, I'm pretty sure, used a 9 volt battery.

Thanks.....Dave

Oops! Must be getting color blind or too old. Mine is red (I had one of the blue but upgraded for the higher head speeds) with rechargeable inside. I knew I did 9 volt batteries for awhile and now just charge.

To add to the confusion, the blue one I have has a four cell AAA holder. I originally had a blue one with 9 V battery. Hmmm, I may put a 4 cell AAA NiMH in there.

The MA is the best tach ever made. I'm still waiting for an LCD shutter tach.

Tach Trouble/Service ?
Where can the tach be sent for service? Mine runs up to 1500rpm then the wheel stops but you can hear the motor humming. I thought it was because I wasn't getting a proper charge in the battery but that apparently wasn't the problem.

Thanks.....Dave

I have the red one. It's been nothing but problems since day one. I too had the wheel stop. I opened it up and it was a loose screw. I also found the batteries not holding charge well. I put a new set in. Not much better. Seems this thing is a power hound. Now it works up to about 1700 then the wheel stops but the display is still strong.

Next I'm gonna try an external larger battery. Any suggestions?

If there is uneven pressure on the case it can bind the shutter ever so slightly and that can cause drag on it.

Make sure the wheel is not rubbing on something as assembled. Also you might try lubricating the stepping motor shaft. My new one made weird noises until I did. I used Hitec servo grease but maybe tri-flow or graphite would work as well. How many cells is the battery ? Maybe an extra one to get 6V like four AAA alkalines would help.

Best one ever made means functionally when working. It has the typical made in someone's basement quality. The wheel/disc instead of a drum is what makes it better - the design.

I never had an issue with either one. The only problem with the newer one is the case. If you put the tach in right side up, it will turn on the switch and next time you go to use it, battery dead. I believe there was a note inserted after a while to put it in the case upside down, then when you take it out it actually turns on.

Hey Kevin, we always put the originals in upside down. The original case was better.

I don't even use mine much anymore, with the ICE ESC's I just look at the RPM when I get home, pretty accurate too (have measured at the field then checked later). Still carry it with me everyday to the field though.
