The PowerLab requires a 24V power supply, and it can drain up to 50 Amps out of the power supply. I know that when I charge my duel 6S 5000mAh battery at 4C it is using 45 Amps out of my PS. For remote places I use a Honda 2000i generator.

Now the PowerLab 8 can still charge from a car battery, but it only charges up to 500Watts, and you will probably need to keep your car running.

So, would you say that if you dont have enough power to run this it is a waste of money,well not a waste but maybe more than one would need? If i am at home i'm not worried about fast charging.I am leaning toward this charger,but i am also thinking i should buy 2 chargers around 200 watts each.

Thanks for all the replys everyone.

It does not matter what charger it is. If you have two 200 Watt chargers you are still using 400 Watts. No matter what you use, you may need to run your car after a couple of charges.

I just thought of something. The PowerLab 8 has a safety feature that you can setup so that it stops charging if the supply voltage goes below a specific point. This may help to keep your car battery alive so that you can start your car. Also you can discharge your battery and put the discharged energy back into your car battery.

Now that is pretty cool

Can you safely parallel charge two 6s packs? what if they are not discharged the same amount? If i hooked the PL8 to my truck battery and left it running, how long would it take to charge the 2 packs?

yes you can parallel 2 6s packs safely.you can get their "safe paralell"adaptor.

charge time will depend on how you set it,GENERALLY speaking(battery condition,and state of discharge/balance play important roles.assume 80% discharge for the following)
from my own personal experience using a cellpro10s
1C charge rate = 1 hour
2C = 25-30min
3C=15-20 min
4C/5C 10-15 min

once you get above 3C the final balancing affects time more than the actual charge

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on the PL8, is this thing as complicated as the manual makes it seem

Not really. I used the computer interface to setup all of my PreSets. Once you have the preset the way you like them it is very easy to charge things at the field.

thats the beauty of the Cellpro stuff,it has the ability to be completely configured for people who want that, yet its simple to operate if you just want to charge and go.AND they are really really safe, its almost impossible to set them to do something dangerous,many built in safety features

I have both 1 PL8 and 2 3010B's. I actually like the 3010b's better.
They start by pushing and holding one button for 2 seconds, then they ramp up VERY quickly, hence they are a quicker field charger. They are also smaller and less bulky. The PL8 is a nice charger, but you have to toggle through several things before it starts, and it takes
quite a while to begin charging. I use it only at home, and the 3010b's at the field or at home. Just my .02...

Edit: Or the 306b

Check this one out http://www.amainhobbies.com/product...6S-10A-200W-x-2 I just ordered this one and haven't tried it yet, but I have a Protek 106B and love it. This is basically the same thing with dual pack capability. When you add in the price of 149.99 and Amain's customer service, it's pretty hard to beat.

Don't know about that one as the ICharger 3010b is only $40 more and is a 1000w charger.

But it only has one output. I like the ability to charge two completely different packs at one time with one charger. And the 3010B is about $70 more. All depends on your needs.

I have never parallel charged lipos. Can you charge a 6 cell at 5 amps and a 3 cell at 2.2 amps at the same time? If not, that's the advantage of having dual outputs. Whether or not you need that capability is totally dependent on your situation. As I fly a 450 & a 600,it is very convenient to only have to take one charger to the field.

This is a rebranded iMax B6 Duo that didn't do very well in the reviews, mainly because of repeated hardware failures (burned FETs, dead LCDs etc) and voltage and current measurement issues:

I really hope that better components and better QA went into the Protek version.

That post was from June 2010 and the testing was done on a pre-production unit. Hopefully the Protek version is all squared away. I've been doing business with Amain for a while and I am confident that if there is a problem , they will make good.
